In 2010, The Home Depot launched Innovation for Sustainability, a program designed to connect its buyers with small and medium-sized Ontario and Quebec-based manufacturers of innovative, environmentally preferred, home improvement products.
In partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation (MEDI), the Quebec Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade (MDEIE), and Summerhill, The Home Depot has hosted three Meet the Buyer events where qualified manufacturers were invited to pitch their products to earn an in-store trial.
Since its inception, Innovation for Sustainability has received over 480 applications, invited 138 manufacturers to pitch their products, and selected 90 products to be trialed in select The Home Depot stores. To date, 11 successful products from the first event have been scaled up to larger markets, with the ultimate goal to be sold nationally.
