Garage Doors Take Centre Stage

If curb appeal is a must-have for your home, consider investing in a striking new garage door. Not only will it provide security and comfort, it could increase the value of your home by up to 4 percent. After all, garage doors stand front and centre and account for up to 30 percent of the face of your home.

Garage Door Materials

There are four types of construction materials: wood, steel with overlay, stamped steel, and aluminum. You'll find an incredible selection of garage doors at The Home Depot.

Wood Garage Doors

Clopay Reserve Wood Garage Door

Handcrafted wood garage doors are available in elegant carriage house designs offering old world charm with modern operation. At The Home Depot, traditional rail and stile frames are made from popular wood species such as redwood, cedar, and hemlock. Panels are constructed of exterior grade MDO plywood, and a 1/4" thick hardwood interior backer is glued to the frame for a double layer of protection. Standard dimensions range from 8' to 18' in width and 6'6" to 8' in height. Proper care and maintenance are imperative to the appearance, longevity and performance of a wood garage door.

Steel with Overlay Garage Doors

Clopay Coachman Steel and Overlay Garage Door

Garage doors with steel and overlay construction offer the classic look and feel of wood, and the strength and durability of steel. These virtually maintenance-free garage doors are comprised of four layers; a thick layer of insulation is sandwiched between two layers of steel and topped with a composite overlay. Standard dimensions range from 8' to 18' in width and 6'6" to 8' in height.

Stamped Steel Garage Doors

Clopay Stamped Steel Garage Door

Stamped steel garage doors have deep embossed short and long panel designs and are available in one-, two-, or three-layer construction. They are dent and scratch resistant and more economical than other types of garage doors. Standard dimensions range from 6' to 18' in width and 6' to 8' in height.

One-layer steel garage doors are non-insulated and stamped from a single layer of galvanized steel. Minimum width may start at 4'2".

Clopay Value Series One-Layer Steel Garage Door

Two-layer steel garage doors consist of a galvanized steel outer skin and vinyl-backed insulation to provide quiet operation.

Clopay Value Plus Two-Layer Steel Garage Door

Three-layer steel garage doors have an additional layer of durable galvanized steel to protect the insulation on both sides, increase dent resistance and provide ultra-quiet operation.

Aluminum Garage Doors

Clopay Avante Aluminum Garage Door

Aluminum garage doors are lightweight and rust resistant, and can accommodate both solid aluminum and glass panels. Create a sleek and contemporary garage door by matching your aluminum frame with a clear, obscure, coloured or frosted glass option.

Safety Features of Garage Doors

Clopay Safe-T-Bracket™

Garage doors use either extension springs (one on either side of the track, often used on lighter doors), or torsion springs (typically one or two along the wall above the door opening for heavier doors). A well-designed spring system counterbalances your garage door.

Most garage door injuries occur amongst do-it-yourselfers while attempting to remove or adjust the bottom bracket that connects the lifting cables to the spring system. This bracket is under the tension of powerful springs and when it becomes less than securely anchored, it can pull out of the door and cause injuries or property damage. At The Home Depot, select Clopay® do-it-yourself garage doors include the patented EZ-SET® extension or torsion spring system for safe and quick door installation.

Measuring for your Garage Door

Measuring Your Garage Door

Please use the drawing and instructions below to measure your garage door. Remember to bring these measurements with you to your nearest Home Depot store when you're ready to make your purchase, and a Home Depot Associate will be happy to assist you.

Step #1

Measure door opening width and height. This determines the size of door needed, and the rough opening should be the same size as the door.

Step #2

Measure the clearance (side room) on the left and right side of the garage door opening. There needs to be at least

3-3/4" clearance on either side to accommodate the installation of the vertical track for standard extension spring and standard torsion spring systems. Specialized extension and torsion spring systems may require more side room.

Step #3

Measure the headroom - distance between the top of the door opening (jamb header) and the ceiling (or floor joist). Standard extension and torsion spring systems generally require 10" to 12" of headroom. If you have restricted headroom, special hardware is available. Additional headroom is required for installation of an automatic garage door opener.

Step #4

Measure the backroom - distance is measured from the garage door opening toward the back wall of the garage. Door height plus 18" is required. Additional backroom may be required for installation of an automatic garage door opener.

Garage Door Openers

It is always recommended that you replace your garage door opener at the same time you replace your garage door. Two types of drives are common: belt drives and chain drives.

Belt drives

  • Use a sturdy rubber-like belt (similar to a car's fan belt) to open and close your garage door
  • Are generally the quietest type of drive
  • Offer years of service

Chain drives

  • Use a metal chain (similar to a bicycle chain) to open and close your garage door
  • Are often less expensive than belt-drive openers
  • Are generally louder than belt-drive openers
  • Can require maintenance or replacement, as chains can grow loose over time
