Why buy LED?
Uniqueness
- When lit, this bulb produces a beautiful soft white, warm light just like a standard incandescent.
- Energy saving – consumes only 12.5 watts in comparison to the 60 watts consumed by a standard 60 watt incandescent bulb (SAVINGS of 47.5 watts).
- Savings in your pocket. For every watt of energy you save, you also save money on your electricity bill. The savings begin immediately when you switch out your inefficient incandescent.
- Energy Star® qualified – Philips is first to market with a 60 watt equivalent Energy Star® bulb.
- The light diffuses in all directions (omni-directional light), casting no shadows (just like an incandescent).
- LEDs last 25 times as long as traditional incandescent bulbs (25,000 hours or more).
- Contemporary design fits most standard lighting fixtures.
Why is the bulb yellow?
The "yellow lens" that forms each cap is made out of phosphor-infused plastic. Inside each cap are blue LEDs – the most efficient LEDs in terms of lumens per watt. When the blue LEDs shine against the yellow phosphor it creates white light. The segmented cap design also helps with thermal management and allows for omni-directional lighting, just like an incandescent bulb.
Myths
LEDs are not bright enough.
The use of LEDs in traffic lights show they are bright enough to be seen even in the daylight. Rooms, tunnels, and entire building facades are now being lit entirely with LEDs.
Philips LED products have been used in more than 17,000 installations worldwide, including such large exterior projects as the CN Tower, the Peace Bridge in Niagara Falls and the LAX Gateway at Los Angeles Airport.
LED wattages are too low so the light output is not bright enough.
Wattage refers to the amount of energy required to light the bulb – it does not translate to brightness. Brightness is measured in lumens. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. The light bulb that produces the greatest number of lumens per watt of energy is the most efficient bulb (sort of like the car that can travel the furthest distance on a single litre of gas is the most fuel-efficient car).
LED bulbs cost too much.
The return on investment (ROI) for the use of LED bulbs is surprisingly fast when taking energy cost and maintenance savings into consideration. In many cases, economic payback can be seen in as little as three years. Savings, however, begin immediately after the LED bulb is inserted into the light socket, replacing the inefficient incandescent technology.
Bulbs with more LEDs (light emitting diodes) are brighter than bulbs with less.
The number of diodes (LEDs) within a bulb is not a reflection of how bright the bulb will be. There are many different types of LEDs and they vary greatly in quality of light output and size. The most accurate measurement of brightness is lumens.
Philips LED bulbs use only the highest quality LEDs. Every LED bulb undergoes thorough testing and analysis prior to being placed on the retail shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an LED bulb?
LED bulbs are a new, energy-efficient light source for accent and general lighting in the home. An advanced technology actually encases one or more LEDs (light-emitting diodes) inside the bulb. LED bulbs contain no mercury, use less energy, and last a very long time. They also produce little to no heat, have no filament or tube to break, and are extremely durable. In fact, Philips LEDs will not break or shatter if dropped.
Will LED light bulbs fit into fixtures I have in my home?
Yes. LED bulbs have standard bases that fit into most standard household fixtures.
Are LEDs environmentally friendly?
- LEDs are already more than three times more efficient than an average household bulb with up to 80% energy savings (depending on the bulb).
- LEDs have a longer life, lasting up to 25 times longer than an ordinary household light bulb. This means lower maintenance and replacement costs.
- LEDs are mercury and lead free.
How long do LEDs last?
Philips' current LED product selection is rated at 25,000 hours (or 22.8 years). LEDs do not "burn out" like traditional bulbs, but Philips considers a bulb at the end of its life once it reaches 70% of the initial light output.
What are the benefits of LED lighting?
- LEDs produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs
- LEDs last a very long time – they're typically rated at 25,000 hours and continue to improve as the technology develops
- LEDs can also emit coloured light without filters that traditional methods require, making the light more efficient and high quality
- LEDs have faster response rates than fluorescent lighting – they turn on instantly and achieve full brightness in microseconds
- LEDs do not contain mercury
- LEDs have the ability to dim and be controlled with timers and sensors
- LEDs are not affected by low temperatures and perform well in cold environments
Are LEDs Energy Star® rated?
Philips is excited to introduce four Energy Star®-qualified LED bulbs to the market: AmbientLED 12.5W Household, AmbientLED 8W Household, AmbientLED PAR30 Indoor Flood, AmbientLED PAR38 Indoor Flood. The Philips AmbientLED 12.5W is the world's first Energy Star®-qualified LED replacement for a 60 watt incandescent bulb.

Myths
Halogen bulbs are not dimmable.
Halogen bulbs are fully dimmable. Halogen bulbs are technically incandescent bulbs, but they have three features that make them superior to standard incandescent. They are brighter, whiter and last longer.
You cannot touch a halogen bulb with your bare fingers without damaging the bulb.
Traditional halogen capsules (such as those used for task lighting, under-cabinet lighting and automotive lighting) can be damaged if touched by bare fingers because of the natural oils on the skin. Philips' halogen standard shaped bulbs have an outer glass which protects the inner capsule from such damage.
Halogen bulbs produce too much heat.
Heat in lighting is measured by wattage. Halogen bulbs generate the same amount of heat as an equivalent wattage incandescent bulb. EcoVantage Energy Savers generate less heat than an equivalent wattage incandescent bulb since they are lower wattage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are they true energy saving bulbs?
Yes. EcoVantage Energy Savers use 30% less energy than an equivalent incandescent bulb. This energy savings translates into savings on your energy bill and also means you will need to change your bulbs less often.
What kind of light do they give out?
These bulbs supply a very high quality bright, white light. For those who prefer a crisp and clean white light, these bulbs are the perfect choice.
What advantages do these bulbs offer versus compact fluorescents (CFLs)?
These bulbs are fully dimmable and controllable (on timers and sensors) whereas there are only a few CFLs that can be dimmed. All EcoVantage Energy Savers bulbs are "instant-on"; there is no warm-up time required for the bulbs to reach maximum brightness. Also CFLs are not fully compatible with all timers and sensors, and therefore cannot be used with these devices.
EcoVantage Energy Savers are easy to dispose as they do not contain any mercury.
Do these lamps meet the new federal government regulations planned for 2012?
Yes. These bulbs meet the standards for the proposed government legislation.
Why are they so expensive?
The initial cost of EcoVantage Energy Savers is higher because the materials used in producing them are more technologically advanced than those used in incandescent bulbs. The superior technology results in significant energy savings over the life of the bulb.

As the bulb wattage increases, so does its lumen rating.
CFLs cannot be recycled because of the mercury.
CFLs can be recycled in a couple of ways. The easiest way is to bring your bulbs to The Home Depot Recycling Box at the front of every Home Depot store across Canada. Municipalities will also have their own system for recycling CFL bulbs. Check with your local municipality for regulations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a CFL bulb work?
Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) use fluorescent technology to produce high-quality, energy-efficient light that lasts far longer than typical incandescent bulbs.
When power is turned on, an electric current is created inside the tube and runs between two electrodes. This current causes the encapsulated mercury to vapourize. The mercury vapour gets "excited" causing the electrons to hit the edge of the tube; in turn lighting the phosphors. This is what makes the bulb glow.
Will a CFL bulb start to get dim with regular use?
The amount of light a bulb generates is measured in lumens-or lumen output. This will decrease over time, which is called lumen depreciation. There's a lumen depreciation curve for all bulbs and lamps.
Can you use CFLs with a timer?
It depends on the manufacturer and type of timer used. Please contact the manufacturer of the timer to determine compatibility.
Are CFLs surge proof?
Yes, CFLs do not have a filament and therefore are not susceptible to power surges or vibration.
Can you use CFLs in outdoor fixtures?
Yes but only in enclosed weatherproof fixtures.
