Step 1

DETERMINE FRAME SIZE

Determine the size of the frame by measuring the magazine/book. Add 1" to the width and height of the magazine.

Ours was 10-1/2" W x 13-3/4" H.

RIPPING

Step 2

RIPPING

Frame stock will be ripped from 1/2" X 8' finger jointed pine.

Rip 1", 3" and 1/2" widths from your piece of pine.

CUT MITRES

Step 3

CUT MITRES

Mitre the corners of the 1" and 3" pine to make 2 frames. The outer edge of the mitred piece will equal the dimension determined in step 1.

The 1/2" X 1/2" piece will be used for the spacer between the two frames.

JOIN FRAME PIECES

Step 4

JOIN FRAME PIECES

Glue and nail the two frames.

SAND

Step 5

SAND

Sand both sides of the two frames.

ATTACH SPACER

Step 6

ATTACH SPACER

Glue and nail the 1/2" spacer to the back of the 1" frame at the top and bottom edge.

ATTACH SECOND FRAME

Step 7

ATTACH SECOND FRAME

Glue and nail the 3" frame to the back of the spacers that you glued to the front frame. Creating a 1/2" opening on the sides of the frame allowing the magazine to slide in.

Note: If your magazine is thicker than 1/2", you will have to widen the spacer to accommodate it.

Step 8

FINISHING

Fill nail holes and sand the completed magazine frame.

CLEAR COATING

Step 9

CLEAR COATING

Spray the frame with a clear coat finish. Use at least two coats. Finish both sides of the frame, front and back, so that it looks good from both sides. You might like to display the back of the magazine, too.
