Project Overview
A super-long shelf packs its own minimalist drama, but build it with hidden LED lighting and you create an even more brilliant style statement - literally!
8 Steps
Show all steps »Step 1
RIPPING
Rip the MDF to create the depth (top) and thickness (front) of the shelf, 4" and 2" respectively.
Step 2
CUT CLEAT
Cut cleat. Rip solid pine to 1-1/4". This will be attached to the wall to screw the shelf to.
Step 3
JOIN TOP AND FRONT
Using glue and 1-1/4" #8 screws, attach the front of the shelf to the shelf top. Countersink the screws and make sure front edge is flush.
Step 5
FINISHING
Sand, prime and paint. We painted the underside of the shelf white to reflect the LED lights.
Step 6
ATTACH LIGHTS
Using the accessories that come with the lights, attach LED Rope lights to the underside of the shelf, close to the front so that it hides the rope light.
Step 7
INSTALL CLEAT
Find studs, then screw the cleat into studs to hold it firm. Be sure to use a level.
Step 8
ATTACH SHELF TO CLEAT
Using 8 x 1-3/4" #2 wood screws, screw shelf to cleats. Be sure to countersink the screw holes.
