Create a Gallery Wall
Project Overview
Simple-to-assemble shelving creates a focus wall suitable for all décor styles. Align black and white photographs in a grid or go multi-coloured and free-form.
12 Steps
Show all steps »Step 1
RIP DEPTH OF SHELF
From a G1S sheet of 2' x 4' plywood , rip a 3-3/8" strip to create the depth of the shelf.
Depth of our shelf was 4", including moulding.
Step 2
CUT SHELF TOP AND BOTTOM
From the 3-3/8" strip of plywood and using a mitre saw, cut the top and bottom of the shelf. Make sure that they are the same size. Ours was 47-1/2".
Step 3
RIP INSIDE SHELF PIECE
Rip the inside of the shelf to size.
This size is determined by taking the overall desired thickness of the shelf, minus the thickness of the top and bottom. (1-3/8") The overall thickness of the shelf is determined by the thickness of the moulding you choose.
On the mitre saw, cut the pieces to the width and depth of the shelf. Ours was 47-1/2"W with a depth of 3-3/8" (before moulding)
Step 4
CREATE CLEAT
To create the hanging cleat, rip a piece of solid pine so that it's a little thinner than the inside thickness.
Step 5
ASSEMBLE THE SHELF
To assemble the shelf, glue and nail, sandwiching the inner parts of the shelf between the top and bottom pieces.
Step 6
CUT TRIM MOULDING
Using a mitre saw, cut corners on a 45o angle. Now attach the moulding so that it covers the front and sides of the shelf. Using Lepage Carpenter's Glue, glue and pin-nail.
Step 7
ROUT PICTURE GROOVE
Using a router and a 1/4" shank round flute bit, make a groove in the top of the shelf. The groove will be 1" in from the front of the shelf. To do this, you will need to screw on a straight piece of wood as a guide. To determine where to screw the guide, start from the front of the shelf and come in 1" then add the router bit size, then add the distance that the router bit sits from the edge of the router. Then screw your guide. The holes that you make in the top of the shelf can be countersunk and used to screw the shelf to the wall.
Step 9
PAINT
Prime the shelf and let dry.
We painted our shelf with high gloss latex. Note that a foam roller works best with high gloss paints since it eliminates brush marks.
Step 12
ATTACH SHELF TO WALL
Screw shelf to cleat by screwing through the countersunk holes using 8 x 1-3/4" wood screws (3 per shelf).
