Create a Wall Hanging Clothes Rack
Project Overview
Using an ENERGY STAR qualifyed clothes dryer will help lower your electricity bill and benefit the environment as well. But you can save even more by damp-drying your clothes. The indoor laundry rack shown here is made from FSC wood and painted with low-VOC paint. It works like a charm.
16 Steps
- Cut two 1x3s 52" long.
- Cut two 1x3s 24-3/8" long.
- Apply glue to the ends of the sides
- Cut two 1x2s 50-1/4" long.
- Mark these pieces at 25-1/8"
- Cut three 1x2s 22-1/2" long.
- Strap these 3 boards together
- Apply glue to the ends
- Cut the dowels
- Fill screw holes
- Prime, then paint.
- Cut the piano hinge
- Mount the magnetic stops
- Screw one end of the chain
- If you want to have multiple stops
- Attach to the wall
Step 1
Cut two 1x3s 52" long.
These will be the top and bottom of the outside frame. Drill 2 pilot holes through the face of each board at both ends.
Step 3
Apply glue to the ends of the sides
and create a rectangle by drilling through the face of the top and bottom pieces into the side pieces. Wipe away any excess glue and make sure the rectangle is square. Set aside and let the glue dry.
Step 4
Cut two 1x2s 50-1/4" long.
These will be the top and bottom of the inner frame. Drill 1 pilot hole through the face of each board at both ends.
Step 5
Mark these pieces at 25-1/8"
and drill 1 pilot hole. This will be where the centre piece will go.
Step 7
Strap these 3 boards together
and mark lines at 1-7/8" and then every 3-3/4" along the entire length. These lines indicate where the dowels will be inserted. Mark the centre of each line and drill through the top 2 boards, but only halfway through the bottom board.
Step 8
Apply glue to the ends
of these 3 pieces and line them up inside the top and bottom pieces. Make sure the piece that has the holes that were only halfway through is on the end with the holes facing inwards. Drill through the face of the top and bottom pieces into the side pieces. Wipe away any excess glue and make sure the rectangle is square. Set aside and let the glue dry.
Step 9
Cut the dowels
to 51-5/8" and slide them in through the side. Stop when you are 1/2" from the end and apply glue to the dowels so when you push the dowel completely in, the glue will be in the joint. Let the glue dry.
Step 12
Cut the piano hinge
50" long and attach to the inner frame using ½" screws. Then line up the hinge on the outer frame so when the inner frame is up, it is flush with the face of the outer frame, and attach with ½" screws.
Step 13
Mount the magnetic stops
on the outer frame so the inner frame stops flush with the outer frame.
Step 14
Screw one end of the chain
to the outer frame 1" from the upper left corner towards the back of the frame, then cut the chain, so when the inner frame is perpendicular to the outer frame the chain is tight. Screw the chain to the inner frame. Repeat on the other side.
Step 15
If you want to have multiple stops
for the inner frame, place additional screws between the 2nd and 3rd dowels from the bottom and loop the chain underneath them.
