Project Overview

Basic garden ingredients can be used to great effect even if space is tight. Harness the power of simplicity and repetition in this project, which incorporates a raised-garden kit, soil, simple gravel and drought-hardy plants.

Step 1

Assemble kit

Using a cordless drill, assemble the Raised Bed Garden Kit according to the directions provided.

Step 2

Set box in place

Choose a location in the garden and place box. Mark the interior space on the ground and remove any sod and a little soil so that box will sit securely in the space. The sides of your box should sit a little above ground level.

Step 3

Cut and fit landscape fabric

Measure and cut weed block landscape fabric to the measurement of the bottom and 3-4" up the sides of the box. Fit inside the box. Cover with a 1-1/2"-2" layer of washed and dried crushed gravel.

Step 4

Add soil

Over the stone, lay a 3"-3-1/2" layer of garden soil.

Step 5

Create planting reference points

Cut and place a second layer of landscape fabric over the soil. Using screws in the frame and twine, layout reference lines to determine plant placement. Cut holes in the fabric and put plants in chosen positions.

Step 6

Create Zen decor

Around your plants, lay down a 1" layer of crushed stone and sand to create the appearance of a stream flowing between the rocks.
