False Stair Tread and Riser Kit
Project Overview
The perfect solution to revive your stairs. The red oak false stair tread and riser kit installs over your existing stairs for a quick and easy makeover. Designed for open and closed stringer staircase. False treads and risers can be trimmed to fit opening and can be finished several times. The kit consists of one false stair tread 3/4" x 10-1/8" x 42" and one riser at 5/8" x 7-1/2" x 42".
7 Steps
- Prepare the staircase
- Cut off the front of each stair nosing
- Measure and cut riser
- Apply construction adhesive
- Measure and cut tread

Step 1
Prepare the staircase
Prepare staircase by removing existing carpet (if applicable), all nails and staples.

Step 2
Cut off the front of each stair nosing
Cut off the front of each stair nosing ensuring tread is flush to the face of the riser. A circular saw can be used for the majority of the cut and a handsaw for the remaining.

Step 3
Measure and cut riser
Measure and cut riser. Use a bevel square and transfer measurement to your riser and cut accordingly.

Step 4
Apply construction adhesive
Apply construction adhesive to back of riser and fasten with finishing nails.

Step 5
Measure and cut tread
Measure and cut tread. Use a bevel square and transfer measurement to your tread and cut accordingly.

Step 6
Apply construction adhesive
Apply construction adhesive, pre-drill holes, fasten with nails or screws and make sure tread is level.
Step 7
Install remaining risers and treads
Install remaining risers and treads and finish to your taste. Product must be installed over existing staircase.
