Fixing Ceramic Disk Faucets

A leaky faucet may be caused by a leaky disk faucet. When this happens you lose energy and money. To fix the problem, follow these instructions for fixing ceramic disk faucets.

5 Steps

  1. Turn Off the Water
  2. Unscrew & Remove the Escutcheon Cap
  3. Remove the Old Neoprene Seals
  4. Clean Cylinder Openings w/ Scouring Pad
  5. Put New Seals in Cylinder Openings
Turn Off the Water

Step 1

Turn Off the Water

First, turn off the water supply at the shutoff valves. Then rotate the faucet spout to one side and raise the handle to expose the setscrew. Remove the setscrew and lift off the handle.

Unscrew & Remove the Escutcheon Cap

Unscrew & Remove the Escutcheon Cap

Unscrew the escutcheon cap to remove it. Take out the cartridge mounting screws and lift out the cylinder. If it's stubborn, grasp the cylinder lever with a pair of pliers and gently pull the cylinder straight out.

Remove the Old Neoprene Seals

Step 3

Remove the Old Neoprene Seals

Remove the old neoprene seals from the cylinder openings.

Clean Cylinder Openings w/ Scouring Pad

Step 4

Clean Cylinder Openings w/ Scouring Pad

Clean the cylinder openings with a scouring pad. Rinse the cylinder with clear water.

Put New Seals in Cylinder Openings

Step 5

Put New Seals in Cylinder Openings

Put new seals into the cylinder openings and reassemble the faucet. To prevent cracking the ceramic disks with sudden water pressure, move the handle to the ON position and then SLOWLY open the shutoff valves. When the water runs steadily, close the faucet.
