Install a Light Fixture

Project Overview

Install a Light Fixture

A new lighting fixture can make an artistic statement in any room, rather like hanging a new painting on the wall. It can cast a soft glow in the corner or brighten a whole room. Fixtures can be used as task lights over your kitchen work area or to help you see the contents inside a closet. Wherever you have an old light, you can find a new one to enliven the space. Replacing a fixture is a simple procedure once you have cut the power at your breaker panel. Look for the perfect style for your room, gather a few tools, and you're ready to begin.

4 Steps

  1. Shut Off Power
  2. Remove Fixture and Mounting Bracket
  3. New Mounting Bracket
  4. Connect Lines

Step 1

Shut Off Power

Turn on the light fixture you will be replacing and turn off the breakers on your electrical panel until you locate the right circuit.

Remove Fixture and Mounting Bracket

Step 2

Remove Fixture and Mounting Bracket

Remove the existing fixture and test the lines in the box to make sure there is no power present before you proceed. Take note where the white, black and ground wires are connected so you can reconnect the new fixture in the same manner.

New Mounting Bracket

Step 3

New Mounting Bracket

Using a screwdriver, install the new mounting bracket.

Connect Lines

Step 4

Connect Lines

Connect the wires in the same pattern they were connected previously. Mount fixture on the mounting bracket according to the manufacturer's instructions.
