Installing Baseboard - Part 2: Installing Baseboard Along the Second and Third Walls

Project Overview

Installing Baseboard - Part 2: Installing Baseboard Along the Second and Third Walls

The moulding installed on the first wall in Part 1 was cut square on both ends. In Part 2, the moulding for the second and third walls will have to be mitred and coped before installation.

3 Steps

  1. MITRE THE BASEBOARD
  2. COPE THE BASEBOARD
  3. NAIL THE MOULDING IN PLACE
MITER THE BASEBOARD

Step 1

MITRE THE BASEBOARD

Mitre the baseboard. Begin with a full length of moulding, and mitre the end. This is the first step in cutting the nesting corner joint, called a cope joint. Cut the mitre so that the point of the moulding is along the back of the baseboard. For now, don't worry about the overall length of the piece.

COPE THE BASEBOARD

Step 2

COPE THE BASEBOARD

Cope the baseboard. Cut along the profile of the moulding that was exposed by the mitre cut. Make the cut with a coping saw, and let the saw do the work without applying pressure.

NAIL THE MOLDING IN PLACE

Step 3

NAIL THE MOULDING IN PLACE

Nail the moulding in place. Measure along the second wall from corner to corner; if the wall has a door in it, like this one does, measure from the corner to the trim. Cut the moulding to the measured length, adding a bit extra to long pieces. Transfer the stud marks from the wall to the moulding, as before. Put the moulding in place, and nail it to the wall with two nails at every stud. Click here for Installing Baseboard - Part 3.
