CUT THE PIECES

Step 1

CUT THE PIECES

Rip four 5/4” x 6 x 8’ cedar boards down the center to create 8 pieces measuring 5/8” x 2-5/8” x 8’. Cut 5/4” x 2-5/8” pieces to create: 6 pieces – 60”; 9 pieces-20”. Rip the 9 20” pieces to create 9 pieces – 5/4” x 2-1/2” x 20”.

PREPARE SURFACES

Step 2

PREPARE SURFACES

Router 1/4” round over on all 4 edges. Sand all surfaces smooth Lay out first frame. Countersink 2 holes at every joint, and glue and screw using #8 2” wood screws.

MAKE PLUGS

Step 3

MAKE PLUGS

Using an off-cut of cedar, create wood plugs with a plug cutter. Glue and plug the holes using the plugs created.

CUT STOPS

Step 4

CUT STOPS

Rip 6 x 6’ of the 3/4” x 3/4” cedar in half at a 45 degree angle to create pieces that have a triangular cross section. Router 60’ of 3/4” x 3/4” cedar on one edge. Sand all pieces smooth. Cut triangular stop from the 3x4" X 3x4" and apply to upper portion of frame work 7/16” in from the edge, with slope facing over edge.

CUT LATTICE

Step 5

CUT LATTICE

Cut lattice to fit smaller portion of the frame. Install lattice in the frame against the flat side of the angular stop, and install second triangular stop to sandwich. Hold lattice in place using 1-1/4” brad nails. Cut square stop (with round edge), and apply to bottom (or larger portion) of the frame work 7/16” in from the edge, with round over facing outer edge.

INSTALL PLANKS

Step 6

INSTALL PLANKS

Starting from the corner of frame, cut 3-9/16” x 5/16” stock to fit on a 45 degree angle, and brad nail until the whole frame is full. Apply stop to secure angle tongue and groove plank (fancy) in place. Repeat steps 6 through 15 for the outer two frames.

FINISH WOOD
