Low-voltage Lighting
Project Overview
Low-voltage lighting is available in ready-to-install kits and as individual lights. Surface-mounted lights are easier to install than recessed lights, but you can create a more finished look with recessed lights. Spend some time looking at the outdoor lighting options available and determine the effect you want to create with outdoor lights. Low-voltage lighting installations usually aren't covered by local code because low voltage isn't considered dangerous. The only regular voltage necessary is a GFCI receptacle to plug in the low-voltage unit. Have an electrician install a GFCI if you're not confident of your electrical skills. Follow the manufacturer's installation directions for the product you purchase. Most units install easily with connections snapping together.
4 Steps
Step 1
INSTALL TRANSFORMER
Connect the low-voltage circuit wires to the transformer terminals. Attach the low-voltage lighting system transformer near a GFCI receptacle. Install the GFCI in an exterior-rated electrical box designed for permanent plug-in use.
Step 2
ROUTE WIRES ALONG FRAMING
Fasten circuit wires to deck framing with exterior-rated cable staples. Route wires on the underside of the deck, under railings, or on the back sides of posts as much as possible.
Step 3
DRILL HOLES FOR WIRES
Run wires through holes drilled inside stairs or other covered locations. Or conceal holes in the seams where decking butts against posts or other framing.
Step 4
INSTALL LIGHT FIXTURES
Insert cessed light units into holes cut in stair risers, perimeter joists, or railing. Position lights to best illuminate stairs and other passageways.
