Make a Modern Trellis
Project Overview
For a high-end, architectural look, opt for a horizontally oriented trellis. It's fresher than traditional styles, and making one from scratch is easier than you might think.
6 Steps
Show all steps »Step 1
Begin by ripping
1" x 4" pine into two 2"W x 4'L and two 2"W x 8'L strips. Then screw the strips to a 4' x 8' sheet of ¾" plywood to create an assembly jig.
Step 2
Rip enough
½"W x 4'L spacers to complete your trellis panel (we used 47 for a 4' x 8' structure) from the 1" x 4" pine.
Step 4
Cut three
2" x 2" x 8'L rails and two 2" x 4" x 8'L side caps. Prime and paint with a light sanding between coats.
Step 5
To assemble,
lay out the 2" x 2" rungs and ½" spacers on the jig. Then glue the rails to the rungs and pin together with two 2" brad nails, making sure each rung is tight against the preceding spacer. Secure the rails to the rungs by countersinking 2-1/2" screws through each rail into each rung.
Step 6
Finally,
remove the spacers and glue and screw 2" x 4" rail caps to each side. Touch up paint if necessary.
