Tearing Down an Old Deck
Project Overview
Replacing a worn-out or poorly built deck first requires its removal. Make this as simple and quick as possible by cutting apart the deck. Have a refuse hauler drop a large waste container as close to the site as possible. Cut the deck into pieces you can easily carry and place into the container. Tell the hauler what material will be placed in the container. Many municipalities charge extra for pressure-treated lumber. Don't mix yard or household waste with construction refuse. Work safely while demolishing a deck. Have a helper support long joists, beams, and posts, if necessary. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask. Make certain you have stable footing when operating saws. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from splinters and sharp edges. Wear work boots rather than sneakers or other lightweight shoes. Demolition of a high deck or one on a steep slope is better left to a professional.
