Rated 1 out of 5 by from These potlights are junk I am a contractor. I have installed many potlights - hundreds of them, maybe even thousands. This was my first time buying and using these lights. I bought 12 of them (three 4 packs). I will NOT buy or use them again. They are garbage. First, the junction box is too small and poorly designed. With one 14/2 wire coming into the box, it's okay. Any more than and things get crowded very quickly. The knock-outs for the wire clamps are in the wrong place. There is one knock-out on each side and one on the bottom side. With only one 14/2 wire coming into the box, it's a tight fit trying to squeeze the assembly up into the ceiling for final fitting. With two or more wires coming into the box, you will for sure damage your hole trying to push the lot up into the ceiling. There needs to be a knockout on the end of the junction box. Get rid of the fancy hinged door on the junction box and make the change. The instructions for the hole sizing are vague at best. I first drilled 3-1/4" holes (first 4 lights). Although the light was relatively easy to push up into the ceiling, it's final fit was VERY sloppy to say the least. The clips barely caught the edge of the drywall to hold the light in place. For the next 8 lights I drilled 3" holes. This hole sizing was a perfect fit for the light housing, but getting the wires shoved back up into the ceiling was a task. Doing so damaged all the holes and more or less negated the smaller, yet better fitting, hole diameter. The packaging for these lights is poor as well. The light housing itself is packed well, but the lense/trim of the light is only protected by a thin mylar film (for display purposes). The mylar does not do enough to protect the lense/trim. There was at least one light in each of the three 4 packs I bought where there was some sort of scuffing or scratching on the trim. It's hard to see through the mylar, but once opened up, the scarring is quite visible. Lastly, the clips holding the light up into the ceiling are too flimsy. Expect to break a few trying to get them to lock in. They are awkward to push up into place and lack good holding power. They are way too delicate. Aesthetically speaking, the light is okay. Price point is decent too, although HD can't seem to figure out how to stabalize the price. I first saw the 4 packs at $149. Then they dropped to $129. Now they are back up to $149. No rhyme or reason.... All other aspects of these lights are terrible. My advice is to spend your money on something else. The only reason this product got one star is because zero stars was not an option. JJ

How far from the kitchen cupboards should I install 3" recessed lighting?

Asked by: Anonymous
It'll depend on the depth of your uppers. I usually set them anywhere from 24" - 30" from the wall. In extreme cases where the fridge gable/upper cabinet comes out close or further, I'll move the lights to 36".
