Traditional staples require a square hit, otherwise it is a mess of twisted metal. These are more forgiving. They also avoid you over-doing it and damaging the NM cable since only plastic rests on the cable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than true staples My thought on this may be entirely "old hat" among those who use such items day in and day out in their livelihood as electrical pros, but I think the two-separate-nails design wins hands down over the original, one-piece staple design. I guess that if you are really good at hitting a one-piece staple just right with every hammer stroke, it is less work to put one in place than one of these guys, but my own limited experience with that original design has most often involved deforming the staple hopelessly after one bad blow and when I have already gotten the staple driven in far enough that it can't be removed without damaging the NM cable and having to start half of my wiring project over again. By contrast, with two separate nails to hit, I can usually get the whole fastener into place without damage to anything by alternately striking the two nails - even if I am almost totally preoccupied with chewing gum at the same time. It is also a good design feature that insulators "bottom out" on the wood surface before excessive pressure can be applied to the cable itself.
