Comparing Light Technologies

Lighting technology has come a long way over the last decade. Now, you often have your choice of bulb types for the fixtures and lamps inside and outside your home. Technologies include: Incandescent bulbs, which produce light by heating up a filament. Incandescent bulbs are economical and start to shine quickly. Halogen bulbs, which produce light by heating up a small tungsten filament surrounded by gas. Halogen lights produce light similarly to incandescent bulbs but are more energy efficient. High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs, which produce light by passing energy between two electrodes. Available only in a small number of shapes, these lights use less energy than incandescent and halogen bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs, which produce lights by ionizing mercury vapour enclosed in a glass tube. Offered in a limited number of shapes and sizes, fluorescent bulbs last longer and use less energy than incandescent lights. Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, which produce light by ionizing argon and mercury, working similarly to fluorescent bulbs. They come in many shapes and outlast halogen and incandescent lighting while consuming less energy. Light-Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs, which produce light by causing electrons to change energy states. LED bulbs are the most energy efficient and longest lasting options.
