A central cold climate heat pump is a whole-home heating and cooling system that connects to a central air system from outside your home. It works by using electricity and refrigeration technology to transfer heat between the outside air and your home, even in in very cold winter temperatures.
When paired with a furnace, your central cold climate heat pump can be used as a supplementary HVAC system, allowing you to switch between fuel sources for optimal savings and efficiency. While new heat pumps are structurally and functionally similar as older ones, their internal components are designed for the different operating pressures of only one refrigerant or the other. This means that heat pumps designed to use R-454B cannot safely or efficiently operate using R-410A and vice-versa.
