How to Plant a Tree

Trees are not only great looking additions to any yard or landscape, they’re also great for the environment and easy to plant and maintain. We’ll show you how to plant and care for your new tree.

  1. Step 1 Dig Your Hole

    Be sure to check with your local utility company to ensure that the area in which you’re about to dig is free of electrical or plumbing. Dig your hole 2x wider and 1.5x deeper than the width and height of the root ball on the bottom of your new tree.

  2. Step 2 Mix Your Soil

    Mix your Soil

    Create A 50/50 mix of normal soil and Miracle-Gro Tree and Shrub soil. This mixture contains phosphorus and iron to promote root development and prevent your leaves from yellowing.

  3. Step 3 Plant Tree

    Place your tree into the hole so that the root ball sits just a bit above the surface of the ground.

  4. Step 4 Fill the Hole

    Fill in the rest of the hole with your soil mixture. Make sure to support trees over 6’ with a stake.

  6. Step 6 Water Until Established

    Water until Established

    Keep watering regularly until your tree is established, this usually takes around 2 years. Putting mulch over the soil can help the roots deal with summer heat and drought.
