How to Choose Between Types of Garage Doors

Choosing your garage door style and material will depend on a number of considerations, including the design and style of your house, as well as your budget.

When replacing your garage door, think about how you plan to use your garage. Considering whether it’s simply for parking cars and stowing bikes and bins, or it will double as a work and living space, will help you determine whether you choose a garage door that allows more light, privacy and security, as well as whether it requires higher-grade insulation.

Garage Doors

Replacing An Existing Garage Door

Your garage door installation cost typically includes all the related components required for installing a new door. If you are replacing an existing door, your garage door replacement cost may be lower if some components can be kept in place – such as the track or the garage door opener. Whether these materials can be kept in place for your garage door replacement will depend on the type of garage door you choose as well as the condition of your existing garage door hardware.

Ask your installer whether any existing garage door components can be retained for your new installation, and if so, whether this will allow you to save on your garage door replacement cost.

10 Factors That Affect Your Custom Garage Door Installation Cost

Material

Garage door prices vary according to the material, whether you choose classic steel or modern glass-aluminum garage doors, stylish faux-wood composite or premium wooden garage doors. Consider which materials are right for your home and your budget.

Single or Double

Your new garage door cost will range depending on whether you need a single-car garage door installation or a double door, both in terms of parts and labour.

Style

The garage door style chosen, whether it's a carriage house, traditional steel, contemporary glass and aluminum or another garage door design, will help determine your garage door installation cost.

Garage Door Opener

Adding a garage door opener to your installation project will add to your garage door installation cost. A number of garage door opener options are available at a range of price points to meet your needs and budget.

Security

Enhanced locks and keypads offer improved security for your garage, but be aware that upgrading with these security features will be added on to your garage door installation cost.

Windows

The number and type of windows you choose, whether they’re basic, clear windows or insulated and privacy-enhancing options, will add to your overall garage door installation cost.

Additional Hardware

Garage door components, such as tracks, rollers, door springs, hinges, handles, locks and step plates, may all need to be purchased to complete your garage door installation.

Labour

The cost of labour will depend on the size and number of garage doors you need installed, as well as whether items such as a garage door opener have been added to your project.

Your Location

Your garage door installation cost may vary from one region to the next based on local material, distribution and labour costs, as well as travel distance for the Installer.

Warranty

Your garage door installation cost includes a one-year installation warranty. Ask your installer about additional product coverage available to you with your custom garage door installation.

What Are My Options for A Garage Door Opener?

A selection of high-quality garage door openers is available for purchase with your custom garage door installation. New designs offer quiet, reliable and efficient operation, and some can even be controlled from your phone or smart home hub.

There are three main types of garage door openers available for installation with your new garage door.

Central Air Conditioner Prices

Chain Drive Garage Door Opener (average price: $230)

The most popular and common garage door openers, chain drive garage door openers offer durable and reliable performance, often at a lower price. Chain drive garage door openers generally perform better than belt-drive systems when lifting heavy doors; however, they require regular servicing, tend to produce more noise and do not operate as smoothly as direct-drive or belt-drive systems.

Belt Drive Garage Door Opener (average price: $309 to $699)

Generally, a belt drive garage door opener is the smoother, quieter option as they produce far less noise and vibration than chain drive systems. Belt drive garage door openers typically offer comparable reliability and durability to chain drive systems, and can lift doors slightly faster; however, they are generally more expensive and don’t work as effectively when paired with heavier garage doors.

Direct Drive Garage Door Opener (average price: $509 to $859)

The quietest, most advanced and efficient garage door openers are direct drive systems, where a DC-powered  motor travels along a stationary chain that’s attached to your garage door. Direct drive garage door openers can be more reliable than belt or chain systems because they involve fewer moving parts; however, they also tend to carry a higher price tag.

How Much Does a Custom-Size Garage Door Cost?

Since all garage doors ordered through The Home Depot Home Services are custom-measured for your home, all sizes of custom-order garage doors are considered standard. Doors are available in two-inch increments for width and three-inch increments for height, with garage door prices within the ranges included in the charts above.

Generally, custom-order garage door prices increase incrementally starting from a minimum width of 6 feet, to a maximum width of 20 feet, with 6-10 feet considered single, and 10 feet 2 inches up to 20 feet considered double.

How Much Does an Insulated Garage Door Cost Installed?

Like other insulation products, garage door insulation is rated according to R-value. A higher R-value means better ability to reduce heat loss from your garage in winter and prevent it from becoming too hot in summer; however, the highest-rated garage door insulation products will add more to your garage door cost.

A garage door R-value of R-10 or R-11 meets the minimum recommended rating for garage door insulation, but depending on your needs and budget, insulation upgrades with R-values as high as 18.4 are available for your garage door installation from The Home Depot Home Services.

With an insulated garage door, you should consider not just the R-value itself but also how you plan to use your garage. For instance, purchasing a new garage door with insulation of R-14 or higher will help you regulate temperature inside your garage more effectively, but may add more to your new garage door cost than necessary if you don’t plan on spending a lot of time in there.

Can an Insulated Garage Door Improve My Home’s Energy Efficiency?

Choosing an insulated garage door can help you boost energy efficiency in your home, potentially saving money on your utility bills. They accomplish this in two ways:Choosing an insulated garage door can help you boost energy efficiency in your home, potentially saving money on your utility bills. They accomplish this in two ways:

Insulated garage door panels

Garage door insulation largely consists of foam, polystyrene or similar materials that are sprayed or built into the panels of your garage door.

Insulated glass

If you plan to order windows for your garage door, insulated, double-paned glass options are available so you can add light to your garage while minimizing energy loss. Choosing insulated glass typically raises garage door prices by about $113 to $229.

Insulate the rest of your garage

The ability of your insulated garage door to regulate temperature and reduce heat loss in your home is strengthened by adding insulation to other parts of your garage as well. Consider installing wall and ceiling insulation in addition to your insulated garage door, especially if you have rooms situated directly above or adjacent to your garage.

Can I Save Money by Installing My Own Garage Door?

Central Air Conditioner Prices

Remember that professional custom garage door installation offers you not only the expertise of an experienced installer, but also a standard one-year warranty that’s included in your garage door installation cost.

Keep in mind, too, that installing a garage door involves a lot of heavy, moving components. It requires a degree of precision to ensure your garage doors open and close reliably and as intended. Installing a garage door incorrectly can lead to higher repair costs down the road, or worse, personal injury or property damage.

In some cases, such as when you require a custom-sized garage door, professional custom garage door installation may be your only suitable option to get the garage door you need.
