I first looked at the Forstner bits, but they were a little pricey. I thought the flat spade bit might make a non-round hole, but the sexy curves and sharp tips on the Bosch bit convinced me to give it a chance. Not knowing what would happen and not knowing how long the bit would last, I bought two. I started with a 1/8" X 2" deep pilot hole to help get the bit going straight, but after that I relied on the screw in the center of the bit. The bit went thru the tree like butter, using a 1/2" drive Ryobi 18-v hand drill with a 4 Amp battery pack. I kept the speed low and allowed the screw tip to pull the bit into the wood, per instructions. I had to reverse it several times to clear the chips, and it was a bit tricky to keep it from biting into the sides of the hole. In order to get to the desired depth (It could go 4" deep as-built), I used a 6" X 1/4 hex extension, which worked well with no difficulty. Thankfully, the bit produced a straight round hole despite several operator opportunities to screw it up, such as backing it out to clear the chips, then trying to find the pilot hole again. When I finished, the bit still looked like new. It easily exceeded my expectations.\n
