If the Philips LED 34/40W InstantFit 4 ft. is 20W instead of 40W, can I install 4 of them with 1 of these ballasts? Philips LED 34W/40W T12 Replacement TLED Instant Fit 48-inch (Model # 466672 | Store SKU # 1001027904).

    Asked by: Kadylak
If I understand the question correctly, then , although logical that a Fluorescent Lamp Ballast for a LED application, If the wiring diagram shows two tube, then no, you cannot install 4 instantFit lamps and drive them from this ballast. IF the BALLAST is for TWO TUBES of 34 Watts/40W each, then the CURRENT through the BALLAST is what is important, as the OLDER Fluorescent tubes were current limited by the balllast. the two pins were connected to a filiament, to aid in STARTING the tube to glow (similar to a NEON advertising lamp. It was the HIGH VOLTAGE of the arc-stream that when hitting the side of the fube, converted the light from the UV spectrum, into Visible light. SO to replace the HIGH VOLTAGE component of the BALLAST, with a LED system, you are doing TWICE the conversion of the electricicty (And loosing energy during each conversion). What is not specified on the ballast, but is written in the literature is the Efficiency of the Ballast. So, even though you have a fixture with four 48" tubes that consume 20W of power (each) for a total of 80 Watts, the Ballast losses some of that power in the form of heat. Even if you lost only 5W overall per bulb, that is worse than if you went to a direct 120V LED linear strip and eliminated the ballast entirely, since with LED and 120V circuits, you need only 120V(black usually) plus the return(neutral-white) wires to retrofit your fixture. The problem with duplicaton of the tubes in the wiring digram , would be how do you wire the starter fillament lead together? In series like a christmas tree light, or in parrallel like an incandescent bulb in your home. You may wish to write to ADVANCE lighting directly to get a better answer.
