Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stain is tacky after 5 days I used Behr No. 5533 Cedar Naturaltone Semi-Transparent Stain and Sealer on my deck. After five days of brilliant weather (no rain and low humidity) it is still very, very tacky. Originally, the deck was lightly sanded and then vacuumed with a ShopVac. Subsequently it was scrubbed and cleaned with Behr Premium All in Wood Cleaner and allowed to dry for 48 hours. My shoes stick to it everywhere. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Appears to be a good quality stain. Bought this a few months ago and used it to stain my backyard fence. Looks great and appears to provide good protection against moisture. Hoping it holds up the 8 years as advertised.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Milky rather than semi-transparent, and beads I bought 2 pails to stain a fence. Although this is nominally a semi-transparent stain, it goes on milky and dries opaque - I would not say that it is semi-transparent. While the first coat adhered readily to the old stain and wood, the second coat tended to bead when applied (after it had been applied for a minute or two, I could then go back and rebrush the stain to get a fuller contact, but the coverage was less uniform). Lets hope the protection is better than the initial experience!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slippery when snowy TLDR: this product becomes very slippery in the winter and shouldn't be sold in Canada. The May 24 long weekend of 2023 I tore down our old front porch and built a brand new porch from pressure treated. Proud of my work, I decided it wanted to protect the wood and add a bit of colour to the front of our house, so I decided on this semi-transparent stain and sealer. It seemed like a good option, towards the top of Behr's offerings while still showing the wood grain and offering 6 years of protection on decks. I carefully followed the instructions, including cleaning the porch with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner #63 and a stiff bristle brush, then applied the product. It was very tricky to try to maintain a wet edge, which is important to ensure an even colour, but after 2-3 coats, the overall finish looked even enough. The finish has held up well over the last 7 months, and I ended up buying a few more gallons so I could finish our side steps, shed, gate and a picnic table to match. Now that snow has landed however, the product has revealed itself to be a hazard. When you have snow between the tread of your shoe and step on the wood, the surface becomes very slippery, to the point that I'm worried someone will fall. I have to either look at installing a rug along the walking path, or removing the stain and finding another product that isn't slippery. I'm disappointed that this product wasn't designed for Canadian winters, especially considering the cost.

My Fence is 2 years old and never been painted...I'm getting ready to put a semi transparent stain on and was wondering do I need 2 coats of stain or just one coat??

Asked by: Mike
Our fence was just over 1 year old.  We did 2 coats of paint and are very happy with the results.  It didn't take long to do the second coat.

We are redoing an older deck that has previously been stained. It is quite weathered but in great shape.  Would this work?  And what cleaner should I use?  As well, how should I apply it?

Asked by: Brenspen
Hi there, thank you for your question, Yes you can use the semi-transparent stain on your deck. Since it's a semi-transparent stain the color of the original stain can affect how the color of the new stain will come out. If the deck isn't uniform in color, I'd recommend removing the existing stain first. You will want to clean the deck with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner before applying the stain. It will clean and brighten the existing wood and help with the adhesion of the stain. To apply the stain, you want to apply 2 coats with either a pad applicator or a 3-8" nap roller and use a high quality brush for the areas that you can't get to with the applicator or roller. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our customer care team is happy to help you! -Ronald

I applied semi-transparent on my pressure-treated deck a few years ago and it faded uglily in spots after only 1 year. Don't remember the brand. Is this product very very light tint, or is there a transparent product you would recommend? thanks

Asked by: Stuart
Hi Stuart, I'm sorry to hear that! This stain is quite sheer but still adds a nice pop of color. We have transparent wood finishes available as well. I recommend looking into our Premium Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish No. 500-N. ~Doris

can you stain over an already stained deck using this product

Asked by: gibber
Hi gibber, thank you for writing in with your question. The Semi-Transparent Wood Stain should be applied on new to moderately weathered, unsealed exterior wood surfaces. It should not be applied over a stained deck. However, our Solid Wood Stain can be used on previously stained surfaces in good condition. Have a great day! -Giovanna
