Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Impressed We bought this last year, we chose Desert Sand. Love the color. We had replaced all the boards and railings on our deck the year before, so we were ready to stain last year. My husband cleaned and prepped the wood and after many days of work, the work was fully compete. It looked beautiful , until this spring. It is peeling, and we are not impressed, after all the prep, hours of work, waiting days between to apply the second coat (not to mention that we couldn't use our deck for about 2 weeks) I am not sure if we got a bad batch, but it looks horrible. I can say, the use of the product itself was great, easy to work with. But this result is disappointing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just Wait 2 Years Yes this product looks great and applies easy just wait 2 years when it starts to peel. This then requires the expense of purchasing stripper, cleaner and more stain. Stripper does not remove all the old stain so now you have to sand, extremely labor intensive. You cannot simply apply another coat over the old application because it is a sealer. I like Behr but this is a terrible product. I don't believe any stain will last but there are other oil based products that can be maintained with a simple re coat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stain is tacky after 5 days I used Behr No. 5533 Cedar Naturaltone Semi-Transparent Stain and Sealer on my deck. After five days of brilliant weather (no rain and low humidity) it is still very, very tacky. Originally, the deck was lightly sanded and then vacuumed with a ShopVac. Subsequently it was scrubbed and cleaned with Behr Premium All in Wood Cleaner and allowed to dry for 48 hours. My shoes stick to it everywhere. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should Be Taken Off the Market You've spent the extra money and built your deck with cedar, and you'd like to enjoy the natural look of the wood. Whatever you do, do NOT use this product. Apply two coats exactly as directed and you can kiss that wood grain goodbye. In this case, "Semi-transparent" doesn't mean "half" transparent; it's more like 5% transparent, 95% opaque. You might as well use paint and get some proper weather protection. This stuff gives you the worst of both worlds – the reduced protection of a stain with the flat, two-dimensional look of paint. Unlike a true stain, this stuff doesn't penetrate the wood. It sits on the surface like paint. As if that isn't bad enough, it dries so quickly that it's impossible to blend into a continuous coat. You'll get lots of overlap marks. Six years of protection on a deck? Not even close. Peeling after two. And from day one, I've never seen water bead on this surface. Save yourself a lot of aggravation and use an oil-based stain.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looked great, lasted only a year. Very easy to apply and looks great. But the stain/sealer lasted only a year. I've followed the instructions to the letter but it started peeling off the deck by about a year. The deck is not used often either.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slippery when snowy TLDR: this product becomes very slippery in the winter and shouldn't be sold in Canada. The May 24 long weekend of 2023 I tore down our old front porch and built a brand new porch from pressure treated. Proud of my work, I decided it wanted to protect the wood and add a bit of colour to the front of our house, so I decided on this semi-transparent stain and sealer. It seemed like a good option, towards the top of Behr's offerings while still showing the wood grain and offering 6 years of protection on decks. I carefully followed the instructions, including cleaning the porch with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner #63 and a stiff bristle brush, then applied the product. It was very tricky to try to maintain a wet edge, which is important to ensure an even colour, but after 2-3 coats, the overall finish looked even enough. The finish has held up well over the last 7 months, and I ended up buying a few more gallons so I could finish our side steps, shed, gate and a picnic table to match. Now that snow has landed however, the product has revealed itself to be a hazard. When you have snow between the tread of your shoe and step on the wood, the surface becomes very slippery, to the point that I'm worried someone will fall. I have to either look at installing a rug along the walking path, or removing the stain and finding another product that isn't slippery. I'm disappointed that this product wasn't designed for Canadian winters, especially considering the cost.

I want to stain my deck. The deck size is about 250 square feet. Which can size shall I choose? What kind of staining tool would you recommend? Is regular paint brush good enough? Thanks.

Asked by: Mike
Hi Mike - Thank you for your questions! For a 250 sq. ft. deck, you will need 2 3.79L cans (https://www.homedepot.ca/product/behr-premium-3-79l-semi-transparent-waterproofing-stain-sealer-tint-base-no-5077/1000468976). We recommend using 1 can for your first coat and half a can for your second coat. It's also best to apply this product with a pad applicator or nylon/polyester brush to prevent over application. Best of luck with your project! - Sara
