Rated 4 out of 5 by from my son likes the product and has not experienced any problem in assembly of the product I was leary of ordering this product on-line because of previous reviews on the way Black & Decker packages their work benches and also because of quality problems I had with a couple of other Black & Decker products I had purchased over the years. I was also leary of breakage on the plastic handles since the workbench I reviewed at Home Depot had a broken handle. I was assured by Home Depot that if the product was damaged in shipping I could return it to our local Home Depot store. There was some slight damage to the carton but good enough to give as a Christmas gift. My son assembled it and seemed satified with the product so far.

B&D took a good product, made significant upgrades and somehow managed to mess it up. The one handed clamping is garbage. They use a band between the screws that looks like the side of continuous dot matrix printer paper. Unfortunately, the nubs that go in the holes, don't stay on, so you have to futz about with it nearly every time you use it. Then they came up with the clever idea of having the lead section (nearest to the handles) rotate 90 degrees to help hold odd items. It does not lock at 90 but has so much play you can never do anything serious with it. It was a good product previously, but now it is just another "I can't believe I paid for this".

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fine could be better I have no garage so I need a stable portable work table. This fits the bill. Frame is sturdy. Assembly instructions are poor but you can figure it out. Down grades for plastic components in the vise assembly that require gentle handling. Also, Unlike the smaller model (which I had for 16 years) I find this one extremely difficult to open as it is hard to hold the unit down to unfold to its full height. The work surface is large which is wonderful, the trade off is I can't get my foot underneath to hold the unit down when I unfold it. I am willing to accept that I may be of below average intelligence and will figure it out, but right now it is a major bummer.

However, the wood lamanite planks they use for the top SUCKS. My first one had very bad machineing on the plank nearest the cranks. I had to take it all appart and send it back for a replacement. The laminates of the replacement are now splitting and look as if they will start pealing. This unit is kept, when not in use, in a climite controled environment. Generaly 75 Deg. about 40 % humidity. I'm going to send this one back as well. I can only hope that the wood parts will be better on the third unit. Thankfully I kept the orginal packageing for both. I love the item, but, hate the cheep wood parts.

THE WORKBENCH IS MADE TO FLIMSY THE METAL BRACES ARE NOT STRONG THE TOP IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED MY OLD WORKMATE I BOUGHT IN THE 1970 WAS BUILT MORE STRONGER AND MORE RUGGED I COULD DO ANYTHING TO HOLD MATERIAL AND THE VISE WAS EXCELENT THE NEW ONE CAN NOT COMPARE WITH THE OLD STYLE . ITS BUILT VERY CHEAP TOP HAS TO MANY MOVING PARTS AND ITS NOT THICK ENOUGHT TO HOLD MATERIAL , ALSO THE CRANK SYSTEM IS BAD , OLD ONE HAS SCREWS TYPE TO HOLD MATERIAL , NEW ONE HAS RIBBON TYPE TIGHTEN MATERIAL I THINK BLACK AND DECKER SHOULD GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE FIRST TYPE BUILT . THERE IS NO COMPARISON YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT STRONGER SO IT CAN TAKE A GOOD HIT LIKE THE OLD ONE.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money I have owned a previous version of the Workmate for 35 years but it's in the UK and I'm in Texas so I needed another one. This new one is a piece of junk with the metal is so thin you can bend it with your hand and it arrived damaged. The jaws are sloppy and the wood is thinner than it used to be. B&D have taken an excellent product and destroyed it. I wonder at companies that manage to "improve" a design to the point of it being useless. Save your money and buy something else as this one is going back to the store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not quality I had an old workmate that I used for many years was great. This new "improved model 425 is not made to the same quality standards that I had expected. Plastic belt that runs between handles is a joke, it pops off when you use it and is a pain to put back on. Planks are a hassle and the clamp only works by moving the front piece (when the cheap plastic belt stays on) . Try to hold the object to be clamped and adjust the planks and hope the belt stays on. Why did they take a good product (with a reasonable price) and "improve it to an expensive poor quality high priced product.?" Also legs crave in if bumped ! GOING BACK TOMORROW !!!

The middle board was warped both ends down. The furthest board was cupped. The part that moved to make a vertical fence was so loose it was nearly unusable. It wobbled about 10 degrees each direction. The tolerances were ridiculously loose and quality was sorely lacking. If it were my product I would be embarrassed to sell it. I bought it because I have a workmate 200 from the 1990s and it was fabulous. 30 years of use and it still works. I built a new top for it and cleaned it up and bought new wear parts. I recommend restoring an old one. The new ones are trash.

A clamping vise could be attached. The decks are removable so you could bolted to the center deck clamp.

can i clamp my rigid mitre saw to this workbench?

can i clamp my rigid mitre saw to this workbench?
Asked by: LG
I plan to do this with an intermediate, flat 3/4" plywood base for the saw, using shop 13 ply Birch plywood. I'll use carriage bolts countersunk under the plywood to secure the saw and then clamp the plywood base down to this workbench. That will save the bench top from marring and provide a more secure hold on the miter saw. Then you can move the saw around to balance the weight of the saw and the lateral working force over the legs.

My workmate 400 workbench got left out and the all winter and the wood fell apart. need replacement parts
Asked by: mrwoody
As long as you still have the plastic parts located under the wood, and the bolts to secure the wood to the plastic parts, you can cut a new table top from new wood, boards that are at least 1" thick, drill the desired holes to align with the plastic parts, and you should be good to go. Go to You Tube for tips on how to create a new table top for your B&D portable work bench.

can you add wheels or casters to #425 workmate
Asked by: digger
DC says you can if you are creative. I guess that means that I am creative because I just did. 2 small aluminum assemblies with 2 casters each. I attached these to the steel back of the Workmate which sticks out when collapsed. See the picture.
