Living on 40 acres and heating with a wood boiler up here in Minnesota where -30 below is not at all uncommon, I go through a good 10 full cord of wood and all that wood comes from trees! (TIC) Around here, a full cord of cut and split hardwood runs $250.00 plus delivery, it's about $60.00 a cord for 8 foot uncut, Oak logs. Of course you have to do all the work to get that price and you need a good chainsaw and a few good chains but the cost difference of $2500.00 vs $600.00 is a no-brainer!! My Stihl MS 250 is just too under powered to cut up 10 cord of oak and with an 18" bar, you do a lot of double cuts. This combo with the 57cc engine and a 22" bar, makes for single cuts on large logs and rarely bogs down unless its time to sharpen the chain. Throw on the 18" bar and chain and you have a very reasonable trimmer/root cutter and since its not your 22" processing bar and chain, a little dirt wont freak you out too bad either. My experience: Out of the box, it was easy to assemble, all the parts were there and it went together easily. The chains were very stiff but well lubed. I stuck the handle in my vice to hold the saw and assembled it sitting up, pulled the chain and lubed the tip sprocket and tightened again while lifting the bar (very important, if you fail to do this, your chain will become very lose when you start cutting, you will think it stretched but it did not! The bar just moved up.) then fueled it up, added bar oil, pulled the choke, flipped the switch to 'on' and gave her a pull. I got it to pop after the 4th pull, pushed the choke in and pulled once, the saw fired up nicely. I ran it with no load for 10 minutes, slow, medium and full speed, never sitting at the same speed so the piston rings wouldn't set at a certain speed. I shut it off and let it cool, the chain drooped very little, I tightened it again and topped off the fluids, put my chaps on, threw on my Elvex helmet (very important) and ripped through a few logs. The chain had stretched some so I tightened it up, ran a burr sharpener across the teeth, topped off the tanks and cut for the next hour. Findings, Pros/Cons: The chain was on par with my other Oregon chains, I didn't see any premature wear or folding of the edge, the power was adequate but not on par with Stihl cc for cc of power. Starting was normal as in most saws but there is no throttle lock for wide open starting, kind-a hard to start from the ground without it. Once warm, the saw would restart with a 'drop pull' with the throttle wide open and the brake off. One pull started it every time. The brake is good but I have some melting where I braked when the chain was still driving. The power switch can get bumped easily in operation, so watch those hands! Gas consumption is a little high but not really that bad, about 1/2 hour on wide open throttle while cutting. I can live with that! 40:1 gas:oil is fine, very little smoke and no real smell from it, may need to adjust the high idle for your altitude, we are at 1400 ft ASL, I moved the screw about 1/30th of a turn and it runs very well. I tried pure off-road gas with no alcohol and the saw runs smoother and got a nice bump in power in the low range under load. Its now very hard to bog it down with clean gas! It's the alcohol that gums up the carb and makes it impossible to store over the winter with gas in the tank. Bottom Line: at 150, the 22" saw is a steal! If I weer to buy it again, I would have gotten the 22" saw and not gotten the combo, the 18" bar and chain is fine but its too heavy for light trimming work and the 57cc's of power are not necessary for trimming. Of course, I just use it for roots etc so I got my money out of that bar and chain but I will not replace the chain once it gets worn down. It is a Chinese chainsaw, replacement parts (except the bar and chains) are not available but this is a copy of so many other Chi-com saws that finding a universal air filter, spark plug and coil, is not all that hard to find. Notes: This saw uses a non-standard chain, "18" Replacement Chain PN: 52208, 22" Replacement Chain PN: 21117. the 18" chain runs about 20 bucks each and I have found several of the 22" chains for 10 bucks each. I bough 4 from different vendors and they all look like they have Russian writing on the bags and appear to be the same chain.

Having the option of a 14" or 20" bar makes this a very versatile tool for a homeowner. This tool will probably be used only 1-2 times a year and the 14" bar will work for most of my duties. Having a 20" bar is a great option if I have a larger job or need another chain in the middle of a project. Swapping bars is very easy so having the extra bar/chain was a good investment to have a tool that is always ready for any projects I will attempt. At this time I can't offer any input regarding durability, etc. I have used it twice in the past six weeks and it is easy to start and powerful enough for the trimming and small tree removal at my house. The small (~16 oz.) fuel mixing bottle that is included is a great convenience with markings to add gas and then 2-cycle oil for the 40:1 ratio. You might have to have to mix gas several times for a larger project but that avoids having excess 40:1 gas waiting to be used. Chain bar oil is NOT included so buy a sufficient amount to avoid stopping your project. I barely avoided that problem so now I keep a gallon in the garage.
