The holes around the sides are like vents allowing air flow and providing oxygen to the flames. When you can see the flames throughout, it's a beautiful picture and creates a cozy atmosphere. I did spray it with Rust-Oleum High Heat black enamel spray paint to prevent it from rusting ($12). We love our fire pit so much, we have enjoyed so many bonfires since we received it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Desmond from Absolutely Perfect It was time to replace my old fire pit as the bottom had rusted out and all the mesh holding the ashes and sparks had disintegrated. After shopping around for some time, I finally found this amazing fire pit. The round shape and small holes for venting and viewing give this fire pit a classic look. The size is just right and you can easily burn 4 - 5 logs at a time to make a nice warm fire and inviting fire. It takes about 5 minutes to assemble and comes with the necessary tools. It is light grade steel and similar to what you find on any of these fire pits. This has an open air top, so you will get sparks and ashes flying through the air, so it should be used in an open space away from any structures. Overall, I am extremely satisfied. The price was excellent too when comparing to what else is available. I burn just over a face cord of wood through the year and I am expecting this to last at least 5 years.

Q:; Does this Fire Pit come with a grill or cover (top) ? . As one of the pictures seems to show a flat cover grill w/a handle.
