Rated 2 out of 5 by from Barely made it a year I bought this factory reconditioned, never seemed "tougher" than my 10 year old dewalt it replaced but was a nice drill. It died when I attempted to drill 4 1 1/2 inch holes through four 2x4's to run a water line. Prior to that I had mostly used it for screws and small concrete anchors. It literally started to smoke after the third hole. Of course I never registered it just incase they would extend some sort of warranty. Guess I get to fix it myself.

Felt well balanced with the large battery installed. I also installed the side handle for drilling on an extension ladder. The side handle works great. Easily adjusted with a few twists. I used this for all the smaller holes for tapcons. Mounting junction boxes. I would like to have seen a clip mounted on the base to clip to my tool belt or pouch, as the 1/2" drill/driver does. This kit came with the soft briefcase style bag, but I moved everything over to my 32" toolbox.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Everyone needs a big Bosch chuck/hammer drill, so I bought this with the intention of having a good versatile tool to last me a while. You can tell that this thing is well made and has heft to it. It has a crisp speed change button on the top, a work light right above where the battery is located, and just feels smooth to operate - it isn't clumsy feeling. I haven't actually used it for anything other than drilling holes in all sorts of things. But I have a few suggestions though that I hope bosch will listen to: 1) The labeling of the hammer drill and clutch wheel should not be done with paint. Mine have easily been scratched off and I don't even use it that much. They should be indented in some way into the metal to make them permanently labeled. 2) This drill should come with a pocket clip, and clip bolt holes on each side of the drill for ambidextrous use. 3) Fix the wobbly/mis-aligned chuck. My Bosch hammer drill is the same way. When you are drilling, the bit (drill bit, nut setter, anything) wobbles a good amount. Now this doesn't really affect performance, but it's what separates the wheat from the chaff in terms of drills. With as impressive as your drills are, I'm surprised that your drills have this wobble. 4) Have a level on the back of the drill (I noticed a craftsman drill had this feature), which of course makes drilling straight up and down, or completely horizontal much easier. 5) Make the steadying ring (at the end of the chuck) longer and more bulky. It's too small to really be a effective. But is a great idea and should be exploited. Y'all seriously could make this THE drill for any contractor to have. It already is a ubiquitous tool with the beefy hammer drill action and active response technology, and with those features added to it, there'd be nothing else out there like it with so much packed into one drill.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice tool but not tough enough I bought this drill to replace an old dewalt hammer drill and although this is a powerful tool, it is not as solid as the dewalt. The biggest issue is that when it is really working hard, the whole drill will twist and flex as if its trying to absorb impact or something. When it does the angle of whatever I'm drilling becomes askew and the drill can bind up on itself. I will admit that I am pushing it and drilling through 1/2" steel with a 1" step bit. For most things like wood or concrete, its perfect but I don't like the flex.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Notch This is a solid drill. It’s well balanced & has a nice feel to it – sturdy and well built, but not too heavy (though heavier than a standard drill). The LED light is bright and positioned to provide maximum lighting, and the depth gauge is an extremely useful accessory. It’s really easy to switch between drill modes for different applications, making it very versatile. As for performance, it makes quick work of most wood applications, effortlessly driving 8” lag bolts and running small hole saws. It wasn’t as smooth of an operation with my 6”’ hole saw though – it’s almost like it couldn’t spin quite fast enough. It certainly did the job, it just wasn’t as effective as I’d hoped at that size. It’s been pretty flawless with everything else I’ve thrown at it though. I haven’t had an occasion to need to use it extensively with concrete yet, but the hammer action was certainly a noticeable improvement over a regular drill when drilling a couple small holes in the cinderblock wall of my crawl space. I can vouch that the Active Response Technology works – it’s definitely saved me from twisting my wrist a time or two. The battery life is excellent; so excellent that including a spare battery almost seems frivolous (but appreciated!). Overall, high-quality kit with nice safety features. If you’re in the market for a hammer drill, I don’t think you can go wrong. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes light work of drilling into concrete & backerboard and batteries carry a long working charge We decided to try out this Bosch hammer drill as we're remodeling our bathroom and have a lot of drywall to hang, wood framing to secure to the concrete pad and backer board to hang in a bath/shower enclosure. This drill is fully featured and soaked up everything we asked of it with ease. A great pro quality tool that is powerful and durable. Perhaps the most useful feature is the hammer drill which makes drilling into concrete a breeze. I had previously labored with a non-hammer drill trying to get a 3/8" x 4" Tapcon bolt into the concrete pad to anchor a sill plate. Without the hammer drill, it took about 20 minutes per hole plus lots of arm pressure to grind out the bolt hole. With the hammer drill mode on this Bosch, it took about 1-2 minutes to drill each 3/8" hole. The drill comes with a side handle and depth gauge accessory and I found the depth gauge very useful when figuring out how deep to go into the concrete pad. The extra handle is also useful for controlling the drill with an extra hand when drilling into concrete. The hammer action also makes setting backer board screws much simpler as the hammer helps the backer board screw bite into the concrete of the backer board. The ratchet tension is also easy to control with the usual rotary dial on the chuck and the ratchet also works in 'hammer' mode. The two 'Fatpack' batteries carry a good charge and I was able to hang most of the ceiling and walls in an 8' x 8' bathroom before switching batteries. The battery charger has a quiet cooling fan which you can hear when it is switched on and the batteries charge quickly. The drill itself is clearly heavy duty and weighs more than a typical low cost cordless model. When I was hanging drywall for the bathroom ceiling I started to notice the weight of the drill by the time I got to the second sheet. When hanging drywall, I found that the ratchet setting on the chuck allowed me to get better control of the drywall screw depth in the sheetrock using the included bit and bit holder than by using a drywall setting bit. While I never actually encountered it while using the drill, this model also has a torque safety cut off feature. If the drill senses a rapid rotation of the handle grip relative to the chuck rotation, the motor will shut off to prevent injury to the operator. This is an excellent safety feature given the heavy duty capability of the drill and the likelihood that larger drill bits may bind in concrete or metal at some point. The drill comes in a soft sided storage bag which holds the drill, batteries and charger when not in use. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid performer, great with wood, light masonry This is a great kit, comes with a soft case, two LI-Ion batteries, charger, attachable handle, and a dept stop. It has plenty of torque and it absolutely tears through wood with either a hole saw or a self-boring bit. It's a bit slow in concrete, but does an adequate job there and is great in other masonry. It's solidly built, I dropped it once, and knocked it off a 6' ladder once too, and it still works great. The housing has some scratches, but no cracks and no change in performance. The drill is light enough that it won't cause major arm fatigue. It's weight is well balanced (something I always look for in a drill). It has an LED light (pretty standard these days), but it's on the base near the battery instead of on the handle or the body under the chuck. What does this mean? It means the light will actually illuminate what you're working on instead of having your drill point shadowed from the chuck. The nice feature here, which you don't notice until it works, and even then you don't remember this feature exists, is the Active Response Technology. Essentially the tool senses when the drill bit is seizing and turns the motor off instead of transferring the torque from the bit to the body of the drill and snapping your wrist as a result. The reason I say this is that when it happened to me, instead of my drill spinning like a pinwheel, it just stopped. It took me a while to figure out what happened, I initially thought my battery died, but it was the active response thing. Worked like a charm. If you have other Bosch tools, this is a no-brainer since the batteries are easily swappable. If you're looking for a standalone hammer drill, this is a solid contender.
