Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bring the right tools This is a concrete product. You WILL NEED a proper masonry bit, drill, saw and fasteners to go through this stuff. It weighs a lot per sheet so bring someone along to help load and unload this stuff. If you're going to use it as a non-combustible layer between a woodstove/decorative gas stove and a floor and are going to use a heavy-duty contact cement/adhesive make sure the product can withstand the heat! Great product! Good Luck!

I have an area that is an entrance to a basement apartment, under the front porch, above grade and on top of a concrete retaining wall. Heavy rainfalls can result in water falling on the outer cement board from the porch roof. Is Durock the right product?

    Asked by: Jeannette
It would depend upon how much water is expected, i.e. cascading water or intermittent wetting, and what the final finish of the wall you are planning. When in doubt, Durock® Brand Cement Board with EdgeGuard™ would be the safest solution. It is ideal for direct applied, tile, stone and thin-brick systems.

Can this be used in damp locations - eg a basement. Is it mold/mildew resistant like concrete?

    Asked by: jake
I used this in my shower. You can probably use it in a basement, but it isn't paintable. If you want something paintable, you might want to look at densshield.

What compounds would you recommend for creating an inside 45 corner bead between a piece of Durock and Drywall?

    Asked by: Alex
Note: For dry untiled areas -for small areas where the CGC Durock® Cement Board with EdgeGuard™ will not be tiled, such as a board extending beyond the tiled area and abutting another surface, treat joints as follows. Seal CGC Durock® Cement Board with EdgeGuard with High-Performance Tile Mastic or Type I Ceramic Tile Adhesive. (Mix four parts adhesive with one part water.) Embed CGC Joint Tape over joints and treat fasteners with CGC Durabond® Brand Setting-Type Joint Compound (CGC Durabond® 45 or 90) applied in conventional manner. Flat trowel CGC Durabond® Setting-Type Joint Compound or CGC Lightweight Compound over board to cover fasteners and fill voids to a smooth surface. Finish joints with at least two coats CGC Ready-Mixed Joint Compound. Do not apply ready-mixed or setting-type joint compound over unsealed board and do not skim coat large surface areas.

What is the process for making Durock paintable? It was recommended as a non-combustable for a fireplace. Fireplace instructions say to use fibre-mesh tape and 2 coats of "yellow" mud followed by one coat of "green" mud.

    Asked by: Alex
Durock is a tile backer and is not designed to be painted. If painting is required there are some EIFS manufacturers such as Dryvit or Sto, who have systems using cement board with their basecoats for smoothing and elastomeric finish coats for painting. Taping would be an alkali resistant fiberglass tape (not drywall tape) and portland cement to set the tape in. If the Fireplace instructions refers to a yellow and green mud, you would have to ask the fireplace manufacturer for clarification.

    Asked by: Julie
It is not necessary to apply a waterproofing membrane before laying ceramic around a shower. Before ceramic installation, prefill joints with tile-setting mortar or adhesive and then immediately embed CGC Durock Tile Backer Tape and level joints. If waterproofing is desired, use CGC Durock™ Brand Tile Membrane. See CGC literature piece DTM_DATA_CB492 for CGC Durock Tile Membrane product information on cgcinc.com.

    Asked by: babette

Hi,,, ,Im installing a ''skirt'' 18'' high and around the base outside of an addition with 1/2" DUROCK Next Gen Cement Board Panel, 32" x 5'. what is the process for parging right over the cement board? Thank you, William.

    Asked by: DELLIL
Sorry for the delay in response, as we just received this question. Durock is not approved for exterior applications below grade and must be kept a minimum of 8” above grade. Please follow directions of the manufacturer of the parging material for their recommendations over cement board.

I'm trying to install a natural stone (veneer which is extremely heavy) in my living room. Do I have to remove the drywall first before I install the cement board then  the stone or can I place it over the drywall then install the stone?

    Asked by: Orion
You can install the Durock over the existing ½” gypsum board. You have to increase the screw length to 1-5/8” to accommodate the existing ½” board and the new layer of ½” Durock. You will also have to consider the weight of the stone that you are installing as Durock has limitations. Tile Setting - Ceramic tile and thin brick on walls may not exceed 3/4" thickness, 18" x 18" size, and 10 psf. Ceramic tile and thin brick should be installed in accordance with ANSI 108.5 specifications and manufacturer's directions. Thank you for your question.
