Will this 1/4 in drywall work for skimming over lathe and plaster? Can it be glued to existing walls?

Asked by: Brad
It can be done per ASTM C840 Standard Specification for Application and Finishing of Gypsum Board. Maximum on Centers Spacing of Framing is 16 in or 406 mm (from Table 4 Maximum Framing Spacing for Two-ply Assembly Fasteners with Adhesive Between Plies). If you are using an all-purpose compound, i.e. not a lightweight compound, you should apply it per below. 22.2.3.2 When applying gypsum board with laminating compound, the laminating compound shall be spread or combed over the entire back surface of the board with 1/4 by 1/4 in. (6 by 6 mm) notch trowel. You will also need to do a test patch to make sure you get good adhesion. Depending upon what the condition of the plaster, sealing/painting of the plaster, it might not adhere well. If you are using construction adhesive you should apply per the adhesive manufacturer's recommendation and still do the test patch, for the same reasons as stated above. You will also need to put some screws in to hold the board in place until the adhesive sets.

Hey, could this product flex for a 6 inch radius corner? Thanks

Asked by: leo037
Hi leo037, thank you for your question. The 1/4" Flexible Drywall Panel is specially designed for this purpose. In the CGC Construction handbook starting on page 134 supplies a chart with all details. Quick summary - for 1/4" panel applied with long dimension perpendicular to framing the minimum bending radii is 3ft. If applied with long dimension parallel to framing the minimum bending radii is 5ft.

I have rock and plaster wall in my bathroom which totals to 3/4 inch in thickness. Can i use this 1/4in sheet behind the standard 1/2 inch drywall/greenbaord to build up the required 3/4 inches.

Asked by: Prime
Thank you for your question. The ¼” should be against the studs, because it is too flexible to be a face layer. Assuming that this is not going in a really wet area because it is does not have moisture resistance and it is more in the room area, outside of the shower enclosure.

Hello. I have an existing popcorn ceiling and I would like to cover the popcorn over rather than to scrape it off. Is this 1/4" Sheetrock gypsum suitable for that application, knowing that there is already one layer of gypsum board in place? Thank you

Asked by: Anonymous
Thank you everyone for the help! 1/2" drywall it is. I really appreciate the advice.

what is the lightest material used for wall and cieling coverings

ie drywall - panelling - wain scotting etc.etc.
Asked by: Anonymous
1/4" Sheetrock gypsum panels are the lightest CGC panel for wall applications, however it is only recommended for use in curved wall surfaces. For flat wall and ceiling surfaces, the lightest CGC panel is 1/2" UltraLight gypsum panels. SHEETROCK UltraLight Panels are manufactured to meet ASTM C1396 specifications for 1/2" gypsum panels and 1/2" gypsum ceiling board, and comply with the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada as both regular drywall and ceiling board. They are the lightest 1/2" gypsum panel available in the market. Ceiling installation must meet the application limitations as described in the product data sheet, it can be found at the web address below; http://www.cgcinc.com/media/217501/mk_p_data_ul_eng.pdf
