Rated 5 out of 5 by from why this particular board. putting in a legal basement apartment was educational to say the least. inspectors want things done right. the guys at the home depot in oshawa were very helpful in preparing me for the correct answers for the inspectors. the firecode drywall for the furnace room the ceilings and the entrance walls were exactly what the inspectors wanted to see. thanks again guys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drywall and Supplies The inventory is always in good shape so I can always take the piece off the top of the pile. The isles are wide so I can maneuver and a cart and there is usually a t-square available nearby so I can cut the piece in half right there making it easier to to get it into my truck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product. Easy to install, pricing was descent. It’s a bit heavier than normal drywall due to the Firecode material so make sure you have someone to help you hang it if you can.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Drywall A bit overpriced. Very heavy compared to 1/2” drywall. Screws tore into instead of dimpling most of the time. Otherwise solid piece of drywall. Get what’s advertised.

Is firecode drywall considered to be "non-combustible"? and Can it be used around a gas fireplace insert? Is it more or less combustible than sheetrock cement board?

Asked by: Tony
Firecode drywall is still combustible, it has extra properties added to it to give it a greater “burn time”. In the event of a fire this type of drywall should take longer to burn through. Cement board is what I use when I’m finishing fireplaces for clients. It will be fine with the heat and give you something strong to stone or tile around. Consult with your fireplace manufacturer and local building code as to how far away from the fireplace insert you should be before drywall.

what does Type X mean ?

Asked by: David
Type X Panels provide additional fire resistance over regular 1/2" panels, UL Classification as to fire resistance and meet ASTM C1396 and CAN/CSA-A82.27-M. The Type X gypsum board was introduced in the early 1950s. Its primary use was for wall applications, providing fire protection for wood-frame assemblies. One- and two-hour fire rated walls were developed with one or two layers of 15.9 mm (5/8") Type X respectively. Type X continues to be the most economical gypsum panel in wall applications, where ratings of up to four hours can be achieved with the use of multiple layers. Higher acoustical performance can also be achieved with the use of resilient channels, isolation clips, insulation in the stud cavities and multiple layers of gypsum panel.

The panel itself has no tested fire delay. Depending on the system, CGC Sheetrock Brand FIRECODE Core gypsum panels can be used in 1-2 hour fire-rated wall and ceiling assemblies.
