Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expands and Contracts I use this for a rather different purpose. I have decorated the walls of my cottage with 1/2 round logs to create a log cabin look. But I needed chinking for between the logs. I looked at all the recommended possibilities and they were all very expensive. I spoke with Home Depot and some contractor friends. They suggested Megalite. It is very clean and white - not cement grey. Most important is that it has significant flexibility built in. The wood logs expand and contract regularly with changes in temperature and I was afraid that cement would crack and might fall out. I started using Megalite for this purpose about 3 years ago. So far it is working perfectly and I am extremely pleased with the result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use This was my first time purchasing mortar and the gentleman at Home Depot recommended this for me. I installed some stacked ledgestone around my fireplace and this was easy to use. The only disadvantage I found was that my stones did sag. I would put wood plugs underneath to keep them from sagging. Otherwise, it was great

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great coverage, want better mix instructions Get good range with this, once you figure out best mix ratio. Wish they provided mix to water for partial bag; its trial & error.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minimum sag with heavy tiles Used this mortar for vertical installation of heavy 12x24 inch tiles because it was supposedly the best for this purpose. It didn't disappoint. Minimal sag that easily dealt with. Only word of caution for non-professional installers like myself is to mix smaller batches as it hardens fairly quickly even in slightly below room-temperature conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best mortar I have used for tile I used this to tile a shower wall. This product stuck very well and allowed for a little movement when placing tiles. Very little slippage if used correctly. I was skeptical and it is not cheap, but, I will no longer settle for less. This product performs exactly as one would expect from a top grade mortar. Cheaper mortar is available, but, you get what you pay for.

I'm using XPS rigid foam insulation (as the sub floor) and porcelyn tiles on an outdoor patio area that will see all weather conditions. Is MegaLite an effective mortar to bond extruded polystyrene to porcelyn? Outdoors, will MegaLite crack or swell?

    Asked by: Sam74
Foam insulation is not a suitable substrate for our products. For further assistance please contact us at 1 800 282 8786 option 2.

can you use megalite 30 lb ultimate performance with porcelain tiles outside? Temperatures can drop to minus 30 in winter. I have a concrete base.

    Asked by: Mickey
Yes. I installed last year and they survived the winter but I was careful to follow the company's guidelines which included using RedGard on the concrete and sealing cracks etc. first. They have a good installation video and company is very helpful if you have specific questions. Much easier than using regular mortar.

Can this be used for light colored Marble mosaic backsplash? I am installing over painted drywall in the kitchen, what do I have to do to prep the surface? Just sand it a little? How to deal with small paper tears in drywall, skim coat Megalite on top ?

    Asked by: Chris
MegaLite Ultimate Performance Mortar is suitable for use with most light colored marble mosaics being set on to a backsplash. We would recommend sanding the paint and repairing the damaged drywall prior to application. For further assistance please contact our technical services department at 1 800 282 8786 option 2

what can you use to level off a wall proir oy using thinset. or can you just mix the thinset thicker and use that.

    Asked by: Anonymous
Depends on the type of wall you are talking about. Ideally, you would place a backer-board for wall applications. If that is unlevel, using a rapid-set thinset will probably greatly speed up the process. Technically, though, this can be used for larger dips (up to 3/4" on floors) but there is no specification for walls that I can find.

Is this product recommended as a self leveling coat over floor heat?

We have installed a true comfort heating mat and it recommends to use a dry set latex mortar or a polymer modified self leveling cement. We bought the Megalight mortar and just want to make sure that this product is recommended for the self leveling coat.
    Asked by: Anonymous
If you mean "using it OVER a self-leveling" than yes, it's fine. It has a relatively high bonding strength and the technical data sheet says it is an approved substrate. Basically, anything but OSB is a good substrate, and even that only because of its ballooning in the presence of water (for non exterior grades).
