This thing is fantastic, I bought it to install cabinets, and before the cabinets even came it paid for itself. I have installed a decorative wainscoting wall made with 1x4 pine, not only are they level, but I was able to straighten then out using the line as I nailed. I then installed wrap around shelving in a closet, piece of cake. Then I even used the vertical to set a working line for laying a 45 ft long wooden plank floor. The magnets were the selling point for this model and they are great. If you are considering it, just buy it, it's amazing the uses you'll find.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall works well Works well but is most accurate in the center of the beam. It deviates at the periphery. The best part is that it is magnetic and can attach to any drywall corner metal bead. Makes it functional in most rooms with an outside corner without too much effort. I wish it had a way to clap to something vertical so that you could move it up and down a ladder to get the right height. The clamp it comes with only clamps onto horizontal edges. I tend to grab a ladder and then start piling up pieces of wood or thin things to reach the perfect height. My only other comment is that it eats through the batteries. I've used it for two bathrooms, and a kitchen, and gone through three sets of batteries.

So far I've used it for rough framing layout (plumbing long studs and setting a uniform sill height on a sloped slab). I anticipate it will also be great for installing interior paneling for a renovation project I'm working on where the floors are a bit wavy due to the age of the house. This tool is also great for checking existing conditions to understand which elements aren't plumb or level. Used inside the laser is quite bright and visible. My only complaint is the red laser isn't super visible when used outside in the sunlight.

I was working off of a lift 5 stories up using this to line up ceramic panels. I bumped it and knocked it off the ledge. As it fell, I watched it spin and hit a piece of insulation that was laying on a sheet of plywood that was leaning against the building. I watched in horror as it broke into pieces. The cover came off and batteries went flying. We put the batteries back in and it fired up. Still worked, Nice. Turned it in to the superintendent to get it adjusted.

So glad to come out of the Stone Age with my former Craftsman non-leveling laser level. For me, this model is the "sweet spot": the balance among price, functionality, quality and robustness. I am DIYer so this is a very practical solution for me. This is a non-stock item for most stores, but ordering was painless, and had it on my doorstep within 72-hours without paying any premium for shipping. Bottom line: If you're upgrading/replacing a previous laser level, OR, if this is your first quality self-leveling laser level, I think you'll be very pleased with the DeWalt. Go for it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stops working and Large tolerances Bought and have used this Red one and the Green cross line laser as well, both units comped out after about a month of use. It barley turns on and when it does you don't know how long it will last. New batteries do not change much, even cleaned terminals and all recommended maintenance in the product guide to maintain it. Used to verify attic insulation install levels, used once a week maybe twice, so over usage is not an issue here. Bought this model to have ability to use AA batteries. Worked well for about 2-3 weeks then was totally unreliable. If you buy this do not use if you are going to rely on it for performance. Other then that the case is nice and the clamping system works well. Issue just with performance or lack there of.

Yes, red lasers do work out doors, but you will get better visibility if you wear a set of red goggles. The red spectrum has it's limitations though. If you need to get longer distances I would recommend a green laser, a bit pricier but the way to go for outdoor applications.
