Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice speed square [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This speed square (rafter square) is made of aluminum. No rust and no paint to come off. It is nice and thick. All the markings are well stamped - easy to read. It comes with rafter tables. There's also an inch mark cutout on back end and protractor marks on the hypotenuse. The only thing I do not like is the edges are a little too crisp. The thick edge also makes for a good saw guide (see my video). Made in USA, which is important to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accurate and Made in the USA This square is made out of extruded aluminum (very straight and stiff) whose plain outer edges have been CNC machined to a 45 degree angle. Since CNC machining is inherently accurate the square will stay accurate as long as you don't ding up the edges. The edges were straighter than a lot of the rulers and straight edges I compared them against. An excellent buy .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have Tool For Any Professional Or Diyer These speed squares have been around now for many years. This one in particular is very nice for the fact that the markings are very clear and easy to read. The finish on the tool is excellent can read up to 7 inches and has the typical degrees and measurements for hip Valley roofs and your common cuts and laying out angle degrees. One of the things that I like in particular is that it's made in America. I use this square all the time in figuring out angles degrees and tracing angels in my projects. There are many uses for the square for the fact that one who does not understand all the particulars you can get on YouTube and educate yourself on all the uses that this tool will provide. There is also a calculation engrade on the Square for these complicated angle cuts that will make it easier to figure out and with a little practice you will find yourself using this all the time. these tools are lightweight easy to carry around also a lot of professionals use this tool with a circular saw as a guide to cut a long the edge of the square and make square cuts or angle cuts using this tool to hold against the wood as they push their circular saw along the edge of the tool instead of eyeballing a long a pencil line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very durable with easy to read markings A quality tool all around. Heavy duty aluminum will never wear out. The markings are deep enough that you can easily see them even after pencil marks and chalk marks get embedded in the grooves. The back even has a handy calculator for all the common roof pitches. I only had one shed roof to do which it helped make it an easy job, now I can still use it as a square and for marking off miter angles. I think it is a good durable tool to have on hand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice square This is a sturdy rafter square. Very well made. The numbers are clearly marked with all of the usual measuring tools and calculators. I generally prefer the 12 inch size squares but the size of this tool is nice because you can easily place it in you tool belt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Have I finally got fed up enough with a square that I already owned (similar to the Empire 8" Tri-Square) with the metal portion of the square wiggling out of square when I used it. My square lines were never really square to the board I was marking. So I broke down and spent the $8 on the Magnum Fat Boy. I love it. It's sturdy and always is square! I haven't quite figured out everything it is capable of, but I'm still learning. I used this tool to build garage shelves. This tool is a must have for the DIY'er.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from everything a tool should be I don't really know how to use a rafter square. The surface is inscribed with all kinds of useful markings and information, much of which I am not familiar with. I don't ever plan to use this to put up a roof, I just use it as a very convenient square. The angles on it are perfect. You can hook the protruding edge on a piece of dimensional lumber or moulding and scribe a precise perpendicular cut line lickety-split. Or a 45 degree angle. You can also stand it up on the wider side to make a perpendicular to a surface. Useful for checking square on a mitre saw and many other tools. Finally, it fits in a tool box, easy to take along with you. I find myself reaching for this far more often than a larger square. This is a solid piece of aluminum with crisp, almost sharp, edges, and generous thickness. It is everything a tool should be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to read, light weight [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Light weight and strong, I've broken several plastic squires over the years. Don't have to worry about that with this one. Marking are easy to read.

How do you use this square to measure angles

How do you use this square to measure angles
Asked by: DEPilgrim
Although the other answer is correct ( it will measure 90 and 45 degree angles) you can also measure ANY angle between those two. Simply pivot the tool with the foot against the board. Degree markings are on the opposite side (the Hypotenuse.) The angle markings are laser etched and very accurate because they are of uniform thickness; about .2 mm. So, depending on your eyesight and lighting conditions, you can maintain a high degree of accuracy, certainly fine enough for all framing carpentry. Good technique plays a role in how accurate these are in use. You must close one eye and view the marking from directly above ( or in front) of the piece. That prevents parallax inaccuracies. Marking with a knife or very sharp pencil also helps. In practice, framing carpenters never need that much precision since framing lumber is flexible, especially over long spans as in roof trusses and stairs. The right angles and 45 degree sides are VERY accurate, to within one tenth of a degree over 7 inches. So for those particular angles, these can be used reliably for fine cabinet work and many machine set-ups. Typically, these are NOT used to "measure" existing angles, except for very rough work like framing buildings. They are mostly used for marking cutting angles, not measuring them. They can be used for rough measurement of some angles, but are dependent on user knowledge and technique for anything other than 90 and 45 degrees. Even with good technique, one would not consider these a precision metrology tool. For general carpentry however, they are a VERY accurate and reliable marking tool; far more accurate than most carpenters ever need. There are numerous other uses for these clever versatile tools. I suggest you watch video about “how to use a speed square.” They can find plumb or level, (with a string and bob) mark floor joist locations, rafter angles etc. All of that and more is easy to do with these, but a good video or two is much easier than reading a description. Good luck. I hope this information helps. But in my opinion, every human on the Earth should own one of these. They are excellent versatile and very reliable tools!

what are the various notches for
Asked by: jerry
Notches can be used for drawing lines at common measurement points. Place square lip against edge of board and your pencil in a notch...slide square to make your line.
