This isn't exactly what I was hoping for, but for the price I should have known better. It's made of plastic and is a little flimsy. Also, it doesn't have a feature that allows you to lock it in position. For certain jobs this might be sufficient, but I will probably buy a metal one.

This is cheap and was the only one my local store had in stock. The whole compass is flimsy and lightweight and meant more for kids drawing on paper. The needle is really thin and flimsy and is barely held in place by a under sized screw. It doesn't really have anything to hold it into position once adjusted open, the screw even when tightened does not grab- so you have to drag it very lightly to avoid it pushing open any further. considering this is sold in a home improvement store - we are not using this for pictures so I hope the store should carry a heavy duty one.

Already lost the needle somewhere in the toolbox. Also, can only hold a #2 pencil. Cannot hold my 7mm mechanical pencil or sharpie.

Very nice size and can stand up to use. The only downside is that it does not come with a holder and because it has a very small removable part, it would be helpful. Now to the function part: The metal tip is protected by a sleeve which is removable by unscrewing the tiny screw on the side and sliding it away. Make sure to put the sleeve in a save spot and tighten down the tip. Whatever implement you use, just slide it in the bracket on the other part of the compass and tighten down with the set screw. It's basic but and has a hardened steel scriber pin. They make good tool box additions for working with any material, just add the maker of your choice and you are ready. As we said it's basic, there's no scale on it show how big a circles it's set to, you have to mark it all out on the item or measure pin to pin on the tips of the compass. They work great and are price right, I have a few for difference tool kits. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I like having a small compass in my tool kit for creating arcs and circles, and to use when trying to scribe trim woodwork for walls that out of plane, etc. I recently got this tool to help me draw a circle using a specified radius, and it did an okay job. The hinge moved ever so slightly as I was completing the circle (see picture), making for an imperfect circle. I was able to secure the hinge of the compass using a Phillips head screwdriver (see picture), but this is not a very convenient way to tighten the hinge and still be sure that it will stay in place as it is tightened. Why the manufacturer didn’t use a knurled knob or wing nut here is puzzling, particularly since knurled knobs are used to secure both the pencil and the spike cover . The spike cover is a nice feature to prevent accidentally pricking yourself on the spike, but the knurled knob that is used to hold the spike cover in place protrudes outward, and interferes with the ability to get the compass close enough to the wall for an accurate marking (see picture). Overall, this scribe is priced right and is adequate for occasional hobby use, but I'd be reluctant to recommend it for fine woodworking or other projects where accuracy is important. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Feels a little too light - but good enough for me for me, I am using this to scribe for a circle in the ceiling so I can stick a electrical light housing can up above. I've done a few of these and always I just used the electrical fixture but this might give me that little extra precision. It didn't seem to want to go out to the full 6 inch radius, but the max for me is 3" so it is within range. there is a plastic cover that goes over the little needle, which you'd ideally don't want to lose, it secured with a knurled knob - which if you unscrew it too much, you;ll lose the knob and now you're worse off. Better to lose the plastic cap. This is a very small compass but adequate enough for most do it yourself person. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Handy light duty little compass I often have to make round corners on various wood working projects in my shop, and have often used a can or any available round object to draw the circle on the wood for cutting. Well I finally got this little compass and it is quite handy. There is a needle and/or point for rotating on - you can switch it to either the needle or the less sharp point to use to rotate. Then there is the pencil holder portion. This has a standard pencil sized hole with a thumb screw to hold the pencil. Obviously a simple setup, but it works fine and is light and easy to use. No more cans for my circles. I am not sure how you can actually have a wood shop without at least this compass/scriber. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
