Rated 2 out of 5 by from Only for completely level surfaces Will only roll over the most level of surfaces. Our gate opens onto a paver path with a variation in height of about 1/2” and this is not flexible enough to deal with that.

I was hoping the spring was stronger and add pressure to a sagging fence. Would have been better if the spring could be pre-loaded. To do so, I cut a 1/2” PVC pipe and split it to insert between the spring and the frame of the wheel to add more tension.

How do you figure out how much to preload the sping when installing it?

Asked by: Janet
I used a bit of trial and error and in my case I fully compressed the spring using a clamp and I also temporarily clamped the bracket to the gate for estimating the fit. I released the spring to see how much it would raise my gate and then made the adjustments from there. Once I had it the way I wanted it I marked where I would drill the holes. I hope that helps.

This work for chainlink fence double swing gate?
Asked by: BigPRO
I can imagine it being used on a wide opening. You may need two (one for each swinging side). Installation could be accomplished by drilling and bolting through the upright post of the gate.

installing this gate caster on a sloping concrete walkway where the gate travels (clearance -1/4" fully closed and 1/2" fully opened). Where should the upper hole of this gate caster be base. thks
Asked by: ernie
Hi Ernie, Our gate caster can handle up to 1-3/4" of vertical travel so it should work for your application. Position the gate where the vertical gap to the ground is highest and mount with some of compression on the spring to ensure good support throughout the travel path. More compression will naturally occur as the gap to the ground decreases, the important thing is to have some compression on the spring throughout the entire travel of the gate.

I want to use some of these to make a rolling library step stool (the kind that rolls when nobody is standing on it, but then stays in place when someone steps on it). Will the wheels mark up a dark wood floor?
Asked by: Whisky
Can definately be done. If the spring tension is too strong it can be adjusted.

Could a casters be attached to the gate at the swing out side and the hinge side? Our gate is very heavy and the hinge attachment is not that strong. I think this would take some of the weight off the hinges. This is just a temporary setup, so I do not want to replace the hinges or post.
Asked by: Mermista
Not sure how the wheel fits next to the hinge post when you swing it out. It might work if you give a little wiggle room for the wheel.
