Should top of freezer be colder than the sides

    Asked by: James
Yes! Chest freezers have refrigeration coils in the sides so they can reject the heat to the outer world. The top is just insulation; it stops the "cold from escaping", but it can never completely stop the heat flow, that's why it feels cooler on the top. In a power failure you will feel the side become just as cool as the top. For the chest freezer to work properly the sides need to be clear of junk and not shoved against a side wall. Just like you need to keep your upright fridge from being shoved all the way back. Fridges have coils on the back - you can see them if you pull the fridge out, and feel that they are warm also. Chest freezer coils function the same way, but are covered with the sheet metal of the sides.

Can this freezer be stored on a balcony? Or can you recommend a small one that can

    Asked by: Tshep
Hi, Tshep! Thank you for your inquiry. For the most efficient operation, the appliance should be located where surrounding temperatures will not exceed 110°F (43°C). Temperatures of 32°F (0°C) and below will not affect operation. We hope this information was helpful to you. -Ciara
