As of January 2002, the Canadian Electrical code requires the use of Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) in all branch circuits that supply outlets in bedrooms for new residential construction. In addition to your bedrooms, consider using arc fault circuit interrupters for other living areas of the home to increase your protection and added peace of mind. Arc faults have the potential to occur throughout the home because there are so many ways for them to start. A few of the typical conditions where arc faults may start include: damaged wires, worn electrical insulation, loose electrical connections, overheated or stressed electrical cords. DISCLAIMER: Stab-lok AFIs are suitable for replacement use only (should someone have an AFI that stops working) or for use on circuits in a house that do not require CAFI protection as defined in the 2015 CEC. Any circuits exempt from the CAFI requirements can be upgraded from a circuit breaker to an AFI circuit breaker for additional protection.
