Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Problems After 13 Months I purchased and installed this GE water heater in December 2012. I did a lot of research online before I bought this brand of heater. It is actually manufactured by Rheem not by GE. Rheem has a good reputation for the quality of their water heaters and gas furnaces. I'm not sure why it carries a GE label, that is a little confusing. It took me about 6 hours to install the heater, which included draining and removing the old heater and moving the copper water pipes because I didn't like the location they were in. The heater fired up easily and I've had no problems since then. I also checked Consumer Reports magazine and they said that most water heaters brands are about the same in quality but within brands you should buy the heater with the longest warranty as they are usually built to last longer. I also wanted a heater that had an easily accessible anode as I plan to replace the anode every couple of years. My former water heater was a Bradford White that lasted 24 years and worked perfectly. I considered replacing it with another Bradford White but the anodes are hard to access. They are also sold exclusively through plumbing contractors now. I also considered a tankless water heater but they don't make much sense in the Canadian climate as they need to be oversized to instantly heat the very cold water coming into them. They are expensive, not DIY friendly to install so you need a plumber to do the work and they need periodic maintenance. Even though they are more fuel efficient the added costs of purchase and installation do not make financial sense.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warranty useless Do not base the 12 year warranty as an indication of quality or reliability. (Believe me it's not a good indicator) Note that the warranty is based on the date of manufacture, not on the date it was put into service. Also the warranty does not include labour, and you will be first required to have a plumber verify the tank cannot be fixed. Next you may have to pay to have the plumber return if the product is not available or another visit is required. In my case, both "Home Depot" locations in my area did not have a replacement tank in-stock for over a week and the tank had to be specially ordered in. If you do not have a extended warranty with "Home Depot" and your tank is 5 or 6 years old just have the plumber bring in a wholesale tank with mark-up and pay to have the tank installed. I found it a hassle and a negative experience dealing with GE Warranty Service. I found there absolutely is no cost savings trying to use this limited warranty. Hopefully my experience, helps in your decision, on your next purchase whatever you decide.

Energy Factor

That seems like a fairly bad energy factor? Are there more efficient units? What are the ratings for similar tanks?
Asked by: plumbbum
Hi Plumbbum, The more efficient units would be tankless and to be able to check the other tank types I would need to narrow down the choices by knowing the size, length of warranty, and type (i.e. natural gas, electric) that you are looking for. I hope this helps.

What is the Energy Factor of this heater?

Province of BC and Federal government give rebates on furnaces and hot water heaters if they meet certain energy guidelines. For water heaters they must either be EF (Energy Factor) of greater than 0.8, 0.82 or 0.86 to qualify. How does this water heater rank?
Asked by: dcarteris
The Energy Factor for this hot water heater is 0.59. I hope this helps.
