[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After doing some extensive research The Generac GP 6500 is a top quality Generator for all your power needs. Whether your a contractor or home owner looking for an emergency power source this generator fits the profile. It is a pull start motor and started on the first pull. Instructions on assembly and operation are clear and easy to understand. I took me about a 1/2 hour to assemble with some sockets and wrenches. Your pretty much assembling the handle and wheels. Everything else is factory assemble and ready to go. All you have to do is add the provided engine oil and add 87 octane or above gasoline. On a test run I was able to power my interior lights, 28 cu.ft.refrigerator, 7.0 cu. ft. freezer and according to my calculations should have plenty of watts to fire up my oil burner and Amitrol water heater. For a more permanent solution I have purchased a Generac Home Link Transer Switch. Highly recommend this generator.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Generac GP6500- 6500-Watt Gasoline Powered Portable Generator is a solid performing back-up power unit that has been easy to start (usually 1 crank), is very portable, runs smoothly under no-load and loaded conditions and offers a top tank gas gauge that indicates remaining fuel left. With a 10ft 10AWG NEMA L14-30 Cord, a NEMA L14 weather proof internal installed outside Plug and a NEC Article 702 ANSI\NFPA 70 generator 2-pole El. Panel Interlock kit, was able to provide whole house generation (with minimal power management) while running a 12K BTU window unit, 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, a gas dryer and all of the lighting in a 2800sf home! From unboxing the GP6500 to ready-to-power the home only took an hour for wheel\leg, dual carry handle installs, adding engine oil (1L provided) and gassing up the tank! After powering our home for 3 hours for generator break-in and testing power usage circuits, under no-load conditions closed the gas tank valve to allow the carburetor to run dry...now ready for monthly test runs or future power outage emergencies!!

I was looking at portable backup generators for sometime, trying to find the right one to provide backup power to our home, during power outages. We live in PA and we get hit with all kinds of weather. I did not want any of the CA. carb compliant models. I did not want an O2 sensor, the generator will be running outside. Wanted at least 6500 running watts. After all my research I did purchased this generator. Took 20 minutes to install wheels, steering handle and oil. Read the manual and started the generator on the very first pull of the cord. Can’t beat that for right out of the box. If you are looking for a good reliable generator, that will provide the backup power you need and for the right price, consider this one

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Generac builds a first class portable generator. This unit is simple, but packed with the features you really need. It is manual start with a recoil pull cord. Mine started on the very first pull. The unit requires very little assembly, just the wheels and handle to attach. You do have to add oil to the crankcase before the first start, but they include all the supplies to do it. Comes with a 1 liter bottle of startup oil good for the first 30 hours. Also included is a funnel for adding the oil. Very thoughtful. After that, use a good synthetic oil and change after 100 hours. Uses regular gas, 87 octane. Has a runtime clock and alarms to alert when service is required. Five separate electrical outlets with separate breakers available for the loads you need to supply. Instruction book includes a guide to determine how much load and how many appliances you can run simultaneously. This is a high quality unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I only have 2 hours on the generator for break... I only have 2 hours on the generator for break in. Ran it an hour with the supplied oil, drained and refilled with fresh oil. Ran it another hour and drained/refilled again. I highly recommend these short oil change intervals the first couple of times on a new small engine as the wear metals and oil discoloration were very present in the oil. This will make your engine last longer. BTW, generator fired up on the first pull after adding gas and oil. Runs smooth and not as loud as I was expecting. Sorry I do not have a long term review. So far I think this a good buy for the money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Check to see if Genrac warranty valid in your area Second rewrite of my review for Homedepot. I got this as a solution to run the house on a portable generator with a 10 circuit transfer switch. This will run everything but the AC for us. We had the power go out and I hooked everything up, and it seemed to work great. Except, that after further investigation, the Hz was off on my unit. This is warrantied for 3 yrs by Generac, but good luck getting a local shop to honor the warranty, including those listed on their website. I still don't have a working generator unless I want to pay out of pocket to get it fixed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy Bought this generator to just run my refrigerator when the power was out. Easy set up and start but the gfci would pop every 5 minutes with just my fridge plugged in. This unit is not worth your time I would not recommend this at all. Absolute piece of junk. Wasted $600 on this and still ended up losing $600 worth of groceries

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable I've had my Generac 6500 since September 2008. The only thing that has been replaced is the recoil rope assembly, fuel shut off valve, plug and the oil. That's 5 major hurricanes with extended power outages with no issues and still performs like new. You take care off these generators they will take care of you.

What is the best option for type of gas to us? I have seen unleaded only, high test only, non ethanol only . Mixed messages are confusing.
Asked by: Robert
I ran regular unleaded, 87 octane as manual said was appropriate. It ran fine. Although it did say 91 octane was preferred but not mandatory. Hust don't use anything with more than 10% ethanol or less than 87 octane.

Can this run for 2-3 days non stop?

Asked by: Ed
If you are looking for continuous operation, our industrial generators are better suited. However, the Generac model #7690 is made to run for extended periods during outages. If running continuously, we recommend stopping the generator and checking the oil, air filter, etc. daily. Please refer to the owner's manual for more details about completing a check. Be aware certain warranties may have run-hour limits as well. You can find in the owner's manual online, scheduled maintenance for this unit. https://www.generac.com/all-products/generators/portable-generators/gp-series/gp6500-49st

what does 49/csa mean?

Asked by: john
The codes following the model number sometimes denote things like revision changes that did not warrant a model update. CSA denotes whether or not the model is approved by the Canadian Standards Association. The 49 denotes that the product does not meet California requirements.
