Rated 4 out of 5 by from Necessary kit for the north country. Cold weather kit serves its purpose and works as needed, however, it seems fairly expensive for what you get.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unit required by manufacturer for cold weather climates As mentioned above, unit was required by manufacturer for cold weather climates or the unit's battery could freeze up. Have not had it over a winter so not certain it will work properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product I have the new 22kw Generac air cooled unit and wanted to make the break-in easier on the engine since I installed it late fall when temps were already dropping below freezing in MI. The oil filter ring slipped on easily and pad slid under battery without removing it, but just lifting it a little. I removed the small 240 V fuses in my transfer switch for the 240V N1 and N2 circuits for safety. The directions said to route the harness for the oil filter under the alternator but I just ran it under the front partition next to the battery up to the N1 // N2 block, which is a shorter route. The spring loaded N1 // N2 terminal block did not have enough clamp load to secure one of the wires so I moved it to the blank adjacent redundant terminal across the block which was also 240V. This is certainly not a simple plug and play as I originally thought. The prewired white onnectors above the battery are for the remote monitors, not the heaters. I like the fact that it helps start the engine in temps under 32 degrees because the engine is shipped with 30 weight conventional oil, which I will leave in until the engine has been broken in fully to take advantage of break-in additives added to the oil at the factory. The directions instruct to change the oil to 5W-30 synthetic and the kit comes with a filter. The thermostat seems to work great which will extend the life of the heater pads when temps are above freezing. This is a small price to pay for a big investment such as a $5K Generator, not to mention the $3K for installation of the unit. Another cheaper alternative could be to add a heat lamp the same as you would for your chicken coupe lol... I ordered this from Home Depot so I could easily return it to a store if something went wrong, but every thing was OK at least for the first 2 months I have had it. The Depot shipped within 10 days and I am happy with their service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good item for northern climates My generator was prewired for the Cold Weather Kit so it was fairly easy to install. There is a heated collar that slips over the oil filter and a flat heater that is placed under the battery. Each are connected to a prewired connector. (If your generator is not prewired then a supplied wiring harness has to be connected to the control board which appears a little tricky, especially since the supply voltage to the heaters is 240VAC.) There are thermostatic switches on each heater that turn them on when the outdoor ambient gets low. A problem with this design is that there is no way to make sure the heaters work until it gets cold. I installed the first kit in the summer but did not know that the battery heater was inoperative until December. I received a replacement and now everything is OK. The kit is pricey but seems to do a good job keeping the crankcase and battery warm. I just installed it so I don't know how reliable it will be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Necessary for Cold Weather Straight forward install and works as advertised. It includes an oil filter that should be used with the oil filter heater because it is slightly different in size than an American standard Wix or Frahm filter would be.
Date published: 2014-12-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised Kit was easy to install. Thermostat seems to work, there is no apparent heating when temperature is above freezing. After installing this kit, cold temperature starting seems to be much quicker and easier, requiring only 3 or 4 rotations of the engine.

Does Generac help with a discount to change to the new cold weather kit?

I bought the original cold weather kit. The original cold weather kit is now discontinued. That kit did not have a 'sleeve' for the crank case, just a small pad that was supposed to be attached by adhesive. My Generac certified installer was never able to make the crank case heater stick to the crank case. He told me that in general, he had installed several of the cold weather kits and had the same problem with all of them. I think part of the reason for the new sleeve style crank case heater is in direct response to the poor design of the original one. So, I'm thinking about buying this new one. Does Generac recognize that I wasted money on a poorly designed product and offer a rebate or other discount to buy the new kit?

My model 6437 will be installed next week. I have the cold weatner kit to install, should I switch to synthetic oil before the unit runs?

I don't think these units require break-in, but not clear whether to run awhile with the heavier oil?
Asked by: Will
Per the owner's manual for model number 6437, an SAE 30 oil should be utilized for the first 25 hours of use. After this initial break-in period, you can switch to a 5W-30 synthetic oil.

The loads required in a house will vary, and are not determined by the square footage of the home, but are determined by the items you deem necessary to run in an outage situation. To properly determine the correct generator for your needs, we recommend working with a certified electrician in your local area. For help locating a certified party near you, contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

Generac's automatic standby generators are not designed for prime power. Using an automatic standby generator as a primary power source will immediately void the product's warranty.
