Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor warranty Very disappointed with the warmer for the battery warranty is only 90 days not listed in paperwork anywhere and the silicone is already flaking off just used one winter!!!!! hate to see this item after 5 years of use will not buy another generac product again!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good to have if you live in New England or other cold places I bought the cold weather kit because I live in New Hampshire and in the winter the temperatures are often well below freezing, sometimes below zero overnight. I did not have a hard time installing this kit on my 20KW Generac, although it would have been much easier if the wiring to support it had been present on my unit from the factory (as the instructions suggest is sometimes the case). I did scrape up my knuckles a bit running the wires and I am not really happy with the way I ran the wiring to the oil heater, I could not manage to get the wiring through the existing grommet but I did feed it through the back of the case. It is an expensive option but I believe it will be helpful when the generator needs to start reliably in cold weather.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent addition for winter temperatures Product consists of two heating pads -- one for the battery and one for the oil filter. Keeping the battery warm maximizes its cranking power. Warming the engine oil makes the engine turn over easier, and reduces wear caused by cold starts. I would consider this an essential accessory for the Generac if you will experience outside temperatures below freezing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wish I had been aware of it's existence at the start of winter It is a scary feeling when your generator does not preform it's weekly test. You wonder if it will run when the power is out. Now that I have the cold weather kit to keep it above freezing it runs like a dream when it's below 32 degrees. The cold weather kit was easy to install and really gives us peace of mind when the power is out. It is a simple solution to a scary problem. Every stand by generator should already come with one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Have to wire generator for kit !! Living in a cold climate, this item was recommended for my generator when I purchased it. However they neglect to tell you that the generator IS NOT pre wired for it. you have to wire the generator for this to work. I recommend this if your climate requires it, just plan on doing some additional work for it to work. It is not a plug and play item!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good item for northern climates My generator was prewired for the Cold Weather Kit so it was fairly easy to install. There is a heated collar that slips over the oil filter and a flat heater that is placed under the battery. Each are connected to a prewired connector. (If your generator is not prewired then a supplied wiring harness has to be connected to the control board which appears a little tricky, especially since the supply voltage to the heaters is 240VAC.) There are thermostatic switches on each heater that turn them on when the outdoor ambient gets low. A problem with this design is that there is no way to make sure the heaters work until it gets cold. I installed the first kit in the summer but did not know that the battery heater was inoperative until December. I received a replacement and now everything is OK. The kit is pricey but seems to do a good job keeping the crankcase and battery warm. I just installed it so I don't know how reliable it will be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Necessary for Cold Weather Straight forward install and works as advertised. It includes an oil filter that should be used with the oil filter heater because it is slightly different in size than an American standard Wix or Frahm filter would be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unit required by manufacturer for cold weather climates As mentioned above, unit was required by manufacturer for cold weather climates or the unit's battery could freeze up. Have not had it over a winter so not certain it will work properly.

What do you hook up Generac Cold Weather Kit to?

Asked by: barrycv
The cold weather kit will be powered off of the 240 volt N1 and N2 lines, which are part of the control wires required for proper operation of the generator, and will connect to the control panel with the wiring and adaptors provided in the kit. Comprehensive installation instructions are provided with the cold weather kit. There are no extra wires or power sources needed.

I purchased a Generac Model # 6053 (17kw) in August 2013. Is it appropriately set up for a simplified installation of this Cold Weather Kit?

Asked by: Deputy
My unit is a 20kw, but I assume that all of these models are similar in design. The wiring harness that comes with this kit easily attaches to the push type terminals that connect the voltage sensing wires coming from the transfer switch. This provides the 240v that is necessary to run the heating units. I have also read that some units come with the wiring harness pre-installed. Either way, the installation is relatively simple. Don't forget to switch to synthetic oil if you install this kit.

can I use a shop lite inside the generator instead of the expensive kit

Asked by: itnow
I would say NO, due to the fact that the oil itself would not be heated enough to protect from premature internal stress and wear on the engine internals (especially green engines during break-in period). The engines pull oil from the filter area first during cold start-up, which the kit helps with. The oil filter blanket is warm enough to prevent you from holding your hand on the surface of the blanket for very long while it is activated (VERY HOT) in temps below 32 degrees F! The battery blanket also helps the battery maintain charge (and increase lifespan) by directly heating the bottom side of it. Using a shop light is better than using nothing at all, but is not as efficient as the kit is. I would ask whether your generator is an expensive unit worth investing in the expensive kit to protect it. It is your choice really, depending on your budget and mind set. I had the shop light idea in my head for a while and thought better of it considering the $8K investment I just made on my new 22KW Generac. I also have to ask myself what Generac would query if I ever had to make a warranty claim in the 5 year period ( did I utilize the kit or not, being in cold weather in MI?) Hope this helps with your decision.

how hot does the oil filter sleeve get?

Asked by: mech
The cold weather kit that includes the adhesive block heater and battery warmer are automatically, thermostatically controlled. The oil filter sleeve, to which you are referring, will kick in for operation when temperatures fall anywhere below 32-40°F. The sleeve will then warm the casing up to 65°F. Please note that extreme cold may inhibit the warmers ability to get the casing’s temperature up to exactly 65°F, but will still provide ample heat, to help ensure that the unit will start in cold weather environments. If the sleeve is not any warmer than the air or surrounding surfaces when being utilized, we recommend first checking the kit’s associated connections. If the connections are appropriately configured, we would then recommend contacting a certified servicing dealer. Please call Generac directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722), if you have any other product-related comments, questions, or concerns.

How necessary is this kit?

Asked by: Wary puchaser
For our automatic standby generators, if you expect the temperature to drop below freezing, we recommend utilizing a 5W-30 Synthetic oil, which can be used year round. We also recommend using a cold weather kit, which includes a battery warmer and a crankcase heater. Using the correct oil and cold weather kit will allow the generator to start and run in below freezing temperatures. The cold weather kit compatible with our current 8-20kW automatic standby generators is model 6212. If you are unsure as to whether this kit will fit your generator, either contact your local store or call Generac directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722) with your generator model and serial number.
