Just turn it up and down. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat learns the temperatures you like and creates a custom schedule for your home. Nest automatically turns itself down after you leave so you're not heating or cooling an empty home. You can control it from anywhere using your phone, tablet or laptop. And Energy History lets you see how much energy you use and why. In independent studies, Nest thermostats saved an average of 10% to 12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills. That means it can pay for itself in under two years.[1]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good looking, but brainless. We've had this for a year now, and there's exactly one reason we haven't ripped it off the wall: it looks great. Compared to anything else on the market, it's a Tesla car vs some 4 cylinder econobox. As a thermostat though? Supposedly, a "learning thermostat", a year's experience has me convinced it has a random number generator, sometimes producing random temperature settings, sometimes with absurd results - heating up to 80 degrees, and just now, wondering why the house felt so cold, found it trying to cool to 67 degrees. You'll find yourself wishing you'd never married this thing and instead just bought a basic $25 thermostat. Really.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be aware. This device does not last long. Be aware. This device does not last long. Even if the hardware is fine the version may not be supported. I purchased a version 2 Nest thermostat few years ago. Everything was fine until few months ago when I found it offline. It means that the function to control it remotely does not work. It connects to Wi-Fi, reports itself being online but it is not capable to connect to Nest server to get updates or generate the application key. I tried with Nest support to fix it for more than one hour with no result. The conclusion was I need a newer version. Suddenly when I asked for a discount for the replacement the call dropped. I really expected for the price I paid (almost $300) a longer life.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product can never do what you think it should The product is basically junkware. The product is so fundamentally flawed and overpriced. While you think this unit is driven by AI it is a pile of junk. If you have a 2 stage furnace this thing cannot ever figure out when to engage stage 2 heat because 1. It does not know the heat loss of the structure. 2. It does not utilize outside temperatures and calculate the Delta T to understand that stage is required. This dumb as a bag of rocks product will sit at stage 1 forever wasting energy. You would almost think this pile of junk was put together by the energy sector to further rob the public. On top of all of this nonsense it is over $300.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome smart device! We just renovated our entire house and had the Nest thermostat installed by our electrician. Setup was fast and simple and the settings are easy to navigate. I especially enjoy the option of being able to see the temperature OUTDOORS whenever I walk by the thermostat. (our indoor temp is pretty much always the same so no need to see that number all the time) The time option is a great choice as well. Only downfall is I wish the display had a dimmer, which it very well might and I just haven't found the setting yet. Overall, it's a great product and with the current rebate in place, it's a great time to buy. Definitely worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NEST thermostat makes me happy Bought the more expensive model and a small separate sensor unit. The packaging is beautiful and it comes with all its own hardware even including a screwdriver, plus there is a great setup instructions app. Not a DIY type and I could manage this easily. Our thermostat is located in a cold hallway and that was always a problem for even heat in the rest of the house. Now I can tell the thermostat from my phone to use the temperature at the little sensor unit sitting on the piano in the living room (for example) instead of the temperature in the cold hall. Could use voice and Alexa but I don't. This thermostat combination does exactly what I wanted and it makes me happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best thermostat available and looks great! This is my second Nest Thermostat after having the second generation and having such a great experience with it. This 3rd generation seemed to adjust to our preferences quickly and learned quickly on how best to maximize our heating and comfort. I have tried a number of "high end" brands including the one our builder provided when we built but none are as easy and reliable as the Nest. It works as advertized and is very user friendly. We are able to control from anywhere we travel and would buy again. It works perfectly with our Nest Aware CO2 sensers and cameras which are also by far the best available.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wifi functionality stopped working at 2 years I purchased a 3rd generation Nest thermostat in 2019 from Home Depot, specifically for the ability to control it remotely with Wifi functionality. I started to have connectivity issues a few days ago (October, 2021) and spent hours diagnosing why the thermostat would not connect to Wifi in my home anymore. After reaching out to Google customer service, I was told that because my warranty had expired (2 yrs, as of April of 2021) there were no options to fix or replace the unit. Researching online it is apparent I'm not alone in discovering this flaw with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Home Comfort from your fingertips Not only was the Nest very easy to install, it is easy very to use whether its directly from the device, smartphone APP or google home. I've yet to receive my first monthly heating bill, however, I have noticed my furnace running less than when I had my old thermostat and have not noticed a difference in heating. My only issue that you can't seem to use the home/away auto and a schedule. So currently my NEST goes to away when I leave the house, but I have to manually turn it on before leaving work as my schedule does not turn it on. This can be a pain when I forget to do it as it's currently winter. Overall though great product.

Does this thermostat know whether to use heat or air conditioning depending on what is needed throughout the day to maintain the temperature?

Asked by: Ms_Harley
It does, when it's on the heat/AC mode. When it's in just Heat or just AC, it will only activate that particular unit. When it's on dual, it gives a 4 degree window and will activate the appropriate unit when it falls above or below that window.

How often are you replacing the batteries?

Asked by: Phil
It doesn't work with regular batteries. It has a built in battery which you charge before installing it (it needs a minimum of 3.6V to connect to home wifi). Once installed it works on the power source of your house (electrical wire). The "battery" is more like a back up...so if the main power to your house should go out, it would still be on. If it runs too long without power source and goes below 3.6V you just unplug it and charge 30minutes or so to be abke to connect to wifi and control via app again. If it goes under 3.6V but main power is back on, it would still work manually, it just won'tconnect to your wifi and therefore can't control it via the app Haven't needed to in more than a year that we've had it. It has a safety temperature feature with a minimum and max temperature in the event of your main power source being off and the battery completely runs out and you won't be able to change settings...then at least your house can stay warm or cold enough by default. Also...it has a safety temp feature

We use propane here at the homestead, would we be able to use this product?

Asked by: Lives out in the sticks
You can go to the nest website and use the comparability checker. It shows what wires are needed for the thermostat to operate.. Hope this helps..

Can you control the cycle time when heating up with a gas furnace? If the furnace runs too long it can over heat and crack the heat exchanger. My furnace already runs at least 10 minutes to heat 1 degree Celsius.

Asked by: Sandwichstealer
This thermostat Doesn't control your furnace whether it gets to hot that would be the controls on the furnace itself. What the nest does is learn your routine in the home and to have the right temps at the time you need them and learns when the home can be a little cooler or harmer depending on the season I do believe this is a great unit The Nest service is great

Will the Nest work with my 2-stage heating and cooling system? The spec says single stage.

Asked by: Northern Girl
Depends on which model you are looking at. Below is from their support page. Short answer is yes, they support 2 stage, just not the E model. I have the 3rd gen and works great with my multistage propane furnace. Support for multistage heating and cooling varies between Nest thermostat models: The Nest Thermostat E supports one stage of heating, one stage of cooling, and a second stage of either heating or cooling. You’ll need to manually set the Star connector icon / OB connector as your second stage in the Equipment menu. If you need help, contact a local pro. The 2nd and 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostats support up to three stages of heating and two stages of cooling for conventional systems, and two stages of heating and cooling with auxiliary heat for heat pumps. 1st generation Nest Learning Thermostats support two stages of heating and one stage of cooling for conventional systems, and heat pumps with auxiliary heat

Every year at the change of season we must disconnect our Nest and reinstall our old thermostat in order to get air conditioning to work. Thoughts or suggestions?  We’ve had much difficulty getting support directly from Nest.

Asked by: gr8cdn
Well as I live in Canada I just select auto and then select my highs and then lows ant then it takes care of itself. Not sure why you need to remove the thermostat. Did you have it installed by a knowledgeable person. With HAVC  experience
