Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Approved in Ontario These are greats smoke detectors, however please note that they are not approved by Ontario Building Code. We just built a home and wouldn't pass inspection with these, have to change them in order to get occupancy. We contacted Nest pre-purchase, who told us they are approved, which is why we purchased them, only to find out they're not by our building inspector. Contacted Nest again and once someone from Nest actually investigated, we were offered our money back. We have been told it's because the strobe is not bright enough. The interesting thing is that a friends insurance company offered them a discount if he had Nest smoke detectors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this Product The Nest Detector works great. We tested it with a little smoke and it even detected/sent a message to my phone/ipad that a little smoke was detected but wasnt in full alarm mode. Then it notified me that the smoke was now clearing. Haha. The glowing blue circle glows in the dark as you walk past. The only feature i would like to see is the ability to do the detector test without having to be right near the Nest itself - I was out of town and wanted to test the system (someone else was home but didnt have the app). That is all - otherwise, easy to install even though my last alarm had different number of wires and looks really nice on the wall/ceiling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 97% We LOVE this unit, ended up buying FIVE of them! Happily surprised to see that it has a motion detection soft night light!! We gave 97%, took 3% off because of three following things: 1) Toronto's building code REQUIRES a STROBE light integrated into the unit in newer homes built since 2015!! We had an additional room built in 2015 so we ended up having to buy one more, different manufactured strobe-light detector to fulfill the code :(, 2) The unit should be able to SAY the custom named rooms, though it can already say many pre-programmed common room names, 3) It'd be nice to have colour choices for the picky designers. Hope this review helps :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Four-and-a-half stars Smart device -- almost too smart. Like integration items with my Nest thermostat. CO detected? Furnace shuts off. Smoke detected, furnace blower shuts off. Neat feature is the nightlight which, when motion is detected, will illuminate. It is just a bit too sensitive -- roll over too aggressively in bed, or share a bed with a pet and it will go off. Minus half a star for that . Installation is super easy, and literally goof-proof. Nest app is solid -- will look forward to a consolidated Google Home view that includes everything under a single app. Battery level check / reminder display on Google Nest hub display family would be helpful as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stylish Piece of Mind I bought 3 Nest protects to replace existing smoke/CO detectors that were wired in my house. I wanted them because of the alerts to my phone in case of an emergency. They were easy to install (took about 5 mins for each one), and I love that they communicate with each other and with my Nest thermostat. The only change I would like to see is the ability to make the pathway light brighter. A white ring lights up as you walk underneath it, but because my ceilings are so high, it doesn’t illuminate the hall as well as I had hoped. I highly recommend, have already had family members buy them, and will purchase as gifts for my parents!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very, very good The reason I give Nest Protect a four and not a five? First, I was expecting tight integration with Google Home as opposed to a separate Nest app. It's been a few years in the market now and the Nest and Google Home functions should all be centralized, in my opinion. Also, the mounting hardware could stand improvement. Two points here: It's not easy as it should be to get the unit squared up to the walls and for the best possible look. Also, the clip mechanism that twist attaches the mounting bracket to the actual Nest Protect device is very thin. It's made of reasonably good material but far more delicate than I'd expect.

i have a newer home and wondering if the wired 120v version can connected to gether on same circuit

Asked by: Louis G
I have one of these on each of 3 floors in my newer house, attached to the existing connected circuit that had 'dumb' smoke alarms connected together when I moved in. No problems. The Nest protects don't use the circuit to communicate with each other like the 'dumb' smoke alarms do, but rather communicate using your wireless network. Works great!

Are the wired alarms interconnected like standards wired smoke detectors?

Asked by: stakman1
Yes. Nest Protects, both Wired and Battery models, connect wirelessly using a Nest-developed protocol called Weave that lets them communicate with one another safely and securely without an active Wi-Fi or wired connection. Weave uses 802.15.4 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n to create reliable, flexible, secure and low-power communication between Protects and let you know what’s happening in other parts of the house during an alert or Emergency Alarm.

If wifi is not reliable at my home will this still alert my phone? Does this require a separate google nest home

Asked by: Gunner
Wifi is required to send a notification to your phone in an even there is an emergency. But if there was a fire or CO2 leak then this will still alert the people in the house if the wifi connection was not working. ps. a great solution for poor wifi connectivity is the eero mesh system on Amazon you can fins it here https://amzn.to/3KXSUHZ

is this product legal in Quebec Canada where the requirement is to have the ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada) logo visible? this look like what I need since I suffer from tinnitus and need an alarm that I can shut of remotely

Asked by: enog
Yes: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9243851?hl=en&ref_topic=9346938. It has CAN-ULC-S531-02 “Standard for Smoke Alarms” certification.

Expiration dates on units that people have received? Documentation says these alarms are limited to a ten-year lifetime. I've seen some reviews where people are receiving older units with less than 7 years life left. $$$ for reduced lifetimes.

Asked by: BarbeGrise
All carbon monoxide alarms, including Nest Protect, expire because their sensors have limited lifespan. To comply with UL (Underwriter’s Labs) certification standards, 2nd gen Nest Protect has to be replaced after ten years, while 1st gen Nest Protect has to be replaced after seven years. can I install one item at a time or do I need to replace all detectors at once?

Asked by: hooverdog
You can replace your smoke detectors one at a time. Please keep in mind that whenever you need to reconnect the Nest Protect to the Nest App, you need to reset and re-set up all of them to make sure that all devices are connected.
