Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY THIS FOR 2 WIRE HEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Google is finally admitting that you MUST HAVE 3 wires for this thing to work, you have to have a "C" common wire or it simply will not configure. Note that this is NOT what the documentation says: it says that in most cases 2 wire will work but this isn't true and the Google phone techs are now saying - as are the detailed Google on-line troubleshooting pages - that you have to have a "C" wire or it'll never work. FYI I already have 3 Nest Thermo E thermostats all working in my house on two-wire, but after a few hours and telephone support we've concluded that the 2020 Nest Thermostat is ONLY a 3-wire device.... and this isn't stated anywhere in the Google documents.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from the old model worked, the new model won't work I bought several of these 3-4 years ago to replace all the thermostats in two houses -- except one. They all have been working fine. This new version of the thermostat, however, will not work with a two wire heating system. It requires installation of additional hardware at the furnace, and for my system, it will not work at all, even with the additional part. I have a two wire heating only system (no fan only, no air conditioning, no backup heat system) -- simplest system there is, from what I told. The item will have to be returned and I'll have to purchase a wifi thermostat from another vendor. These guys have outsmarted themselves this time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not trust the online compatibility checker Our existing thermostat was a Honeywell with a wire saver module. The module combines the fan and A/C signal wires to K wire in the HVAC. Before purchase, I checked the Google Nest online compatibility checker which suggested it can work with K wire. When I followed the app to install the thermostat, it said the Nest thermostat is not compatible and need to contact customer support. The support technician was polite but not helpful, even though I showed him the online checker. He recommended me to contact a pro for the installation. I contacted a local pro. His first suggestion was to return Nest and buy another brand that comes with a wire saver module. Which I did.

Contrary to what I read about the nests, this thermostat is incapable of setting a locked temperature range to prevent unwanted extreme temperature adjustments. These nests are set up through the google home app, and not the nest app- and the interface with the temp schedule on the former is poorly done- requiring far too many menus and clicks to make changes. It's incapable of working with the "home" and "away" functionalities if you own a google home. Does the basic functions of a smart thermostat, but the technology and interface is severely lacking

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy the Learning Thermostat instead If you’ve ever used the Nest Learning Thermostats you will be extremely disappointed with this model. I have 3 Nest Learning Thermostats (and at one point had the less expensive “E” version) and everything about this one is significantly cheaper in comparison. There is no turning dial, the screen is really just a small square and you can see the borders in the display (see photo), and the Google home app is far inferior to the Nest app. Even when you adjust the temperature the new sound it makes is irritating. I really hope this isn’t the path that Nest thermostats are heading and that this iteration is just a fluke. I had intended to switch over my mom’s old simple thermostats with this one because of a rebate offered by our electric company, but she’s in her 60’s and the lack of a dial would make adjusting the temperature much too difficult. As far as the C wire debate: in my experience the C wire is not needed when your thermostat controls both heating and cooling. In some cases when the thermostat controls ONLY heating or ONLY cooling then a C wire may be needed.

Other than being monumentally frustrating to set up & configure, it consistently goes "offline" and the local temp plummets, in Chicago in December. Eco mode should be removed, it is a non intuitive cluster. Fortunately, I kept previous Honeywell tstat just in case. I do NOT recommend The Nest t stat

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Won't stay on preferred temp I got this so I could change the temp using Siri (a feature promised by the Home Depot tag). At home I find out it's not compatible with Apple Home, I have to use the Google app. And as best I can tell it's impossible to just set a preferred temperature and have it stay on that temp. Instead it uses preset temperature ranges which means that whenever I check it, it's reset itself to another temp that can be as much as eight degrees off. If you change it at the device then it only stays at that manual temp a few hours. Why won't it allow me to just set a temp to stay at? Returning for another brand or I will just go back to a non-"smart" thermostat.

This is a great thermostat for the price, and does what I need it to do, but as someone that has had previous versions of NEST thermostats in other homes, I find that going through the Google HOME app to control it is complicating something that used to be super easy. In previous versions I would pull up the NEST app and immediately start controlling the thermostat, but now I have to pull up the Google HOME app, and scroll through all of my google home devices to find the thermostat and then gain control. It isn't that complicate, but it was definitely easier before. Other than that, I would have given the product 5 stars.

You need to connect this to WiFi but you can adjust it anywhere you are. For example: I have been at work and I have adjusted the temperature for my not lazy wife.

Does this thermostat support baseboard heaters 240 V

Unfortunately, it doesn't. Electric baseboard systems are generally not compatible with Nest thermostats. They are only compatible if they’re currently controlled by a 24 V thermostat.

Can I operate this with an apple phone

In theory. If the wifi goes out for a second the device disconnects. Even if the connection is regained immediately, it remains "offline" in the app until being manually restarted. Truly terrible design.

This is a subpar unit made by google with the nest name slapped on it because they purchased the company.  The real nest units are much better and will work baseboard heaters but cost $180-250.
