I think that has really prevented it from any rusting. So far in the 2 months that I have had it there hasn't been any rust. Hopefully it will keep it that way.

Sadly, the cover began rusting within a month (We figured, no biggy, and headed back to home depot to inquire, and were suggested to buy a rust protective/fix spray paint to.) Sadly, we wasted more $ on paint to conceal a beautiful yet flawed item. The handles on the tools included were made of cheap plastics and cracked then broke, one within a month, the second after 3 months. The bottom of the pit is chipped and fully rusted since a while. Yesterday was a breaking point. One of the grates in the base popped out. Where it once sat, there is now 2 (not burnt but clearly made manually) holes through the base of the pit. We have only used wood and kindling in this pit. Disappointed and concerned about safety concerns. Do not purchase this item.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the price. Really nice fire out bowl that does the job! The pit itself is big and looks great in our fire pit area. Couple issues we noticed after our first use. The screen on the cover warped from the heat and the black paint peeled off a bit on the cross frame of the cover. Will be able to sand that down and repaint I’m sure if someone wanted to. Other than that it’s a great unit for the price - picked it up at half price.

You're better off buying else where you'll love it at first but the quality is very poor. Husband has had to spray paint it and it still looks bad.

How well does it insulate heat transfer downwards? Will the heat from this kill grass if it’s moved and used on a lawn for a couple hours?

Yes, kills the grass with a size of circle that is maybe 3-6 inches bigger in diameter than the bottom of the bowl.
