Overview

Model # 152574HDBA-74 Store SKU # 1001209675

The natural wood tones of the European Ash Butcher Block Countertop give it a simplistic yet stylish feel to your kitchen, bar, den, or craft room. The wood has a beautiful light to medium brown colour. The ash is unfinished and ready for your personal touch in colouring and shaping. Our butcher block is derived from an ash tree that is native to Europe and western Asia where the hues reflected in the grain are derived from the deep, moist, alkaline soil. European Ash is very hard, tough and well-wearing hardwood that also has highly flexible and shock resistance. The product looks very kitchen-forward but has the resiliency as baseball bats are crafted from the same material.

  1. Easily customize with normal wood working or hand tools
  1. Comes unfinished and ready for various finishes
  1. Fully customizable easily machined, sanded, and maintained
  1. Relatively unknown species to Canada, however this product is seen in houses across Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, West and Central EU as well as in southern countries like Spain and Israel
  1. The hardwood will have gentle swirls of grain that is natural, and defined through the seasons of the ash tree's aging
  1. Edges are 90 and can be kept in the original form of sanded to make an eased edge

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect light wood color and texture! It’s beautiful and light. I’m not putting a stain on it - only sealing with wood oil. I changed from ash to birch and I’m happy I did.

Although it was a lot of work (didn't have the right kind of saw!), it turned out beautifully and everyone loves them! It darkened slightly after treating it with mineral oil, but I like the more finished look and needed it sealed.

I am using it for a custom desk built on top of motorized sit/stand legs and I couldn't be happier. When it arrived there were a couple dents, a couple gouges, and a split chunk near one corner. However, after sanding and finishing, none of them bother me for what I'm using it for. One side ended up being slightly lighter and one side ended up with some darker pieces, so it gave me options on what side I preferred.

I plan on placing this on top of 2 filing cabinets to make a desk. Should I mount wood cauls, from back to front, underneath the Butcher Block Countertop to prevent it from warping over time?
Asked by: TheWorkshop
You really do not need to attach the additional support. As long as you treat all sides of the wood you should be all good.

Does this need to be finished if using for a desk top?
Asked by: Amanda
You,ll need to finish in some manner. I choose not to polyurethane it. Will need to sand and apply mineral oil. I applied and sanded 4 times. Its gorgeous. If youre using for a desk, then you may want to use the polyurethane for a hardier finish. No matter what -- you.ll need to sand lightly and apply a protect-ant of some kind. Purchase a butcher block oil from Home Depot.

I didn't seal it within 2-4 hours, did I ruin it?

I took off half of the shrink wrap on my butcher block and didn't read the instructions until a week later. It says to seal within 2-4 hours. Is it now ruined or compromised for countertop use?
Asked by: Mel
No, it's fine. The recommended time within to seal is precautionary. It's not going to hurt anything unless you have it somewhere in extreme heat/humidity.

Which is better for my kitchen counter top brich or the ash and could i use the satin top coat sealer on both sides

Asked by: Angie
These are both super popular. I have birch in my kitchen and my co-worker has the ash. The birch is more clear while the ash has more character and darker tones throughout. Either way you are going to be happy.

Can an undermount sink be used with butcher block counters?

Asked by: Allenkat15
Yes! I like to add polyurethane as the wood sealant around the area of the sink.

Do I need to sand this before applying a clear coat? I'm using as a desk top. Can I apply lacquer or do I sand first?

Asked by: Ps
I would take a cloth and wipe the block down and then just apply the lacquer. No need to presand as we finished with 150 grit before it leaves our facility.
