Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great butcher block! Arrived well packaged. Was straight and level. The good side was very good and even the B side could have been used if one wanted the look of a few knots-rustic. Since the block was already sanded to the grit I wanted for my gel stain, (Varathane Java gel stain) gave a quick scotchbrite grey pad, no hand pressure scuff, wiped with mineral spirits to clean, then a bit of a flood of spirits, immediately rubbed in stain and took off excess. Zero botching which I was afraid of, but didn’t materialize. Let dry overnight. Templated for undermount sink on the sink run. Skill saw and then finished with 1/4” round over router bit. Lateral lips of sink opening damed up with parchment and clamped boards and finished with Nu Lustre 55 epoxy. That was 4 days though because I needed to have each of the 4 sides level to the floor for the epoxy to set. But now it is waterproof. Did faucet opening as well. The top and bottom of slabs I top coated with Osmo satin 3043. I just followed the “floor” instruction video from Osmo. Simply rolled on with a small nap micro fibre roller, and after applying, light full length no pressure rolls to even out roll lines. They disappeared in seconds flat. Couldn’t be easier. 2-3 coats recommend with overnight drying in between. The boards were pretty dry and it’s always dry here in the winter, so I put on 4 thin coats waiting a full 24 hours in between. A little Osmo goes a long way. It’s coverage is incredible. Got a quart at Windsor Plywood for 60. Covered 4 coats of 98” long and 72” long and still have 1/2 quart remaining. The butcher block counter looks amazing. Very impressed, great value for money. I only gave 4 stars due to time it took to arrive from the states. But, delivery was included, so I guess you have to expect a bit of a delay. Could have been customs as well. Was 5 weeks and was also the holiday season. All in all, couldn’t be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 98” and 74” Alder countertop. Gorgeous product. Was a bit of a wait to get them (1 month) but very much worth it. Just finished sealing them, and tung oil is next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful really nice and looked beautiful with stain. We did end up needing to add a spacer piece at the back so that it would extend out past the depth of our base cabinets but it worked well.

Where do I get instructions to FINISH and INSTALL a 120 inch Alder Butcher Block Countertop in Unfinished, with a 98 inch block in Unfinished as well, in an L shape? Can I just install them at 90 degrees? Do I need a professional to do this? Thanks

Asked by: LOU3
You don’t need a professional to install these. Just someone with common sense and accurate cutting and measuring (if cutting is needed). You can absolutely install the pieces in an L shape, as long as you don’t mind the look of the grain where they meet.

Will properly applied oil alone (ie food-grade Watco 241758 Butcher Block Oil & Finish or similar) be adequate to prevent warping and splitting? Plan to use for kitchen with a sink cut into it and undermounted. Re: Hardwood Reflections|Model # 152 98-inch

Asked by: El Seis
Yep---It is really important to oil all sides of the block a couple times prior to install. Then you are all set.

Is the alder butcher block countertop formaldehyde free? We are looking for something that isn't going to gas off. Also, we would like to use a food safe wax finish but wonder if it is a suitable sealant for alder.

Asked by: Lise
I have used these for several kitchen projects. They are rated food grade so just treat with "Watco" oil treatment sold at Home Depot. As for formaldehyde I assume being food grade material I would say is is free of.
