The system is designed to prevent tipping over sideways...but it is not designed to prevent the parasol from flying off...in fact, the holding screw is not long enough, to reach the post and there is no hole in the pole for the screw to go into. So, the screw pushes against a plastic finger, which in turn lifts up (at an angle) to push against the pole. The plastic finger is part of a rim which simply slips into the top hole of the base....so your post is basically held by a plastic finger tip pushing against it. Not worth it if you use the parasol inside the table, the table will do the same job at preventing it from tipping over.

It seems that the design of the base did not take into account the lateral load of holding up a 8' umbrella that blows in the wind. The sideways (leaning) pressure caused the tube (and bolt) to exert enough pressure on the circular base to split it in two. To the person asking the question if a table is required, I would say 100%. The added stability of having the table prevent sideways leaning of the umbrella would definitely prevent this from snapping in two. I will return it for a new piece as it's possible I got a faulty product but not pleased otherwise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yada Umbrella Base I tried to buy this product last summer, but Home Depot was sold out. I decided to order it on-line this year and pay the shipping so I didn't lose out again, as the Store still didn't have it in stock early in the season. I assembled it with ease, but I found that the main bolt to hold it together was too loose after tightening it as far as it would go. Luckily I had a bunch of extra bolts, washers and gadgets in my "junk" drawer, so I managed to make it stable so it wouldn't move around. It would be nice if it came with that extra washer or a much thicker one. Since the weather has been cold well into May, I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I'm sure it will accommodate my needs. Plus it does look nice! Enjoy.

They were sold out from Burlington to Markham. Luckily it was still available online and was shipped to me within two days. We've been using this base on a paved patio for a month. It's extremely sturdy and looks great!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not bother We purchased this umbrella base thinking it would be heavy and would hold our 7ft umbrella but after the first few days, it keeps tipping over, it does not hold our umbrella rod nicely, it is poorly made from the cylinder piece (it is plastic and cheap), we are fed up of coming home after work and finding it tipped over. It has damaged our screen door by tipping over and our outdoor table. IT IS NOT strong. We are so disappointed.

Installed it into patio table and everything was fine for a few hours until a sudden gust picked up the umbrella and stand and bent the post of the umbrella against the table. I’m not sure what the stand is supposed to do if a simple gust is enough to carry it away. Not a great experience.

Does this umbrella base also require a dining table to support the umbrella? Or can it stand alone without the use of a table?
